Common App Supplement Essays

I was working on the supplement on the commonapp and it says that each short answer should be about half a page or 250 words. For one of mine, my essay is around 450 words but it fits on half a page single-spaced, Times New Roman 12pt font, 1 inch margins. Is this okay or is it supposed to be double spaced? I'm not sure how much more I can cut out... is the limit really strict?

I’ve double spaced everything I have written for several years so I am assuming it conforms to double spacing. Also the word count is more important than the page. I would definitely shave off 150 words.

Okay, I have another essay that I don’t like as much that is around 370 words long that I could cut down a bit more. I tried double spacing 250 words and it was more like 3/4 of a page so I’m not really sure. I guess it would be better to stick with the word count then…

Single spaced is just fine. Double spacing is for school, so your teachers can make notes on your essays.

We don’t count words. We want you to be concise and to the point. Don’t go on for a solid page.

Okay! I’ll try to cut mine down as much as possible but seeing as I started from over 500 words, I feel like it is pretty concise. It is a bit over half a page now but I’ll try to cut it down some more. Thank you so much!
