I plan on applying to a lot of top colleges (Harvard, Princeton, MIT, Stanford, maybe Duke).
Are any of these on the common app? I know at least a few are. If I use the common app on them rather than the individual school apps, is that a negative or what?

I think all of those are, but I didn't apply to any of them, so I'm not positive. They all say they will consider the common app exactly the same as their own, so it shouldn't be a negative. The common app is mainly used by better colleges, so probably most of the ones you are looking at use it.
I would think using the common app would end up being a positive for every school, because you would be able to put more time and energy into it than you would if you were doing 5 seperate applications.

hold on. When i applied i went individual even though i knew about the common app. The thing about the common app was if i chose a certain school for EA\ED do they receive the app first, or what. I turn the app in by oct 15, so does that mean all the schools will have my app by oct 15 and know which one i went EA/ED with.

Also when applying Common App, you still have to fill out a supplemntary for each school you apply to. So if you apply to 7 or 8 schools, it saves time, but applying to just 2 it really has no impact. Plus you can kinda personalize your essay and clubs and stuff to those 2 schools.

Can anyone clear that up, how does the early common app work, and doesnt every school require supplementaries and if so it really doesnt save to much time.

you can submit your common application as many times as you want. for example, if you have a deadline for cornell in december, but your harvard deadline isn't until january, all you do is submit the application and check cornell. then when january comes, submit your application again and check harvard.

Harvard, Princeton and Duke are on the common application; Princeton and Duke also have their own special forms if you want to consider.

Stanford and MIT have VERY unique applications, especially MIT, so you better get on it right away especially if you need teacher recommendations (they are different forms with specific questions rather than allowing you teacher to give a general description about you like on the common application, so give these forms to them early because they're going to have to navigate several different versions).
