And does ANYBODY know how to send the Fee Waiver Requests? Chedva, other mods, college reps, anyone???

The country at which my parents went to college in isn’t on the list and I can’t find the college by just searching the college name. what do I do?

Type in the college name … many colleges won’t be on the list. Dont’ worry.

Wait adrivit,

Is the teacher application on common app in the inviting teacher/counselor option MANDATORY? If i ask them in person, can’t they just write the letter, seal it, and mail it to the school i want? Or do they HAVE TO use the common app form to do it?

Also - how many teachers can you invite? Are the ones you invite the ones that HAVE TO write the recs?

The Common App form is PREFERRED. A letter would certainly do. Just make sure he/she answers the Questions asked in the CommonApp form.

You have to invite 2 teachers and your counselors. Sending additional recs is optional.

I feel slightly silly asking some of the questions I ask ![]()
Anyway…

…What is considered a hobby? Does ‘reading’ count as one, because that is something I love to do and I do it a lot? Or is that redundant and strange?

Good question, cos that’s honestly an activity and the app asks us to list our activities. But everywhere I look, people have such big unusual activities lol.
I think you can put it if you want.

Is putting stuff like playing the violin a good idea even though ive already put orchestras etc… and should i put things that Im in that dont really do that much? like say im an officer for school orchestras and i do a lot of organizing outside of school but its not an extracurricular activity cause its for a class…

Look sev1991, everybody reads, it’s an hobby and it’s fine. But it’s not an activity that defines yourself. Maybe the fact that you understood Stephen Hawking by the time you could tell “Daddy” could distinguish your reading from others … you have to understand that no matter what everybody says about being honest and all, college applications is still a marketing activity. You are selling yourself to the colleges. Why would Harvard take you over 10000 other applicants who read too? I hope you get it!!

jliu: Maybe you can say that you play violin within the orchestra? And you can put the organizing stuff, its good.

I have awards like ISEF Finalist and such.

Should I put them under honors won for an activity because I have Independent Research listed as one, or should I put them under Academic Distinctions?

I typed in my race for my personal information, but I then decided that I did not want to put it on my application so I deleted it and saved my answers. However, when I did a preview my race still appeared on the application despite saving my changes. How can I successfully remove my race from my application?

One more thing for future plans/careers is it okay if I put undecided or will that look bad in adcoms eyes?

simpleperson:
Race- Try logging out of commonapp and then log back in.
Future career: Undecided will not look bad at all. Colleges know that students don’t know yet, and lots of students declare “undecided”. It’s also a fact that a large proportion of students change direction and plans during college studies.

Thank you Sequoia

I have a question that’s probably been answered here, but how are we supposed to time the teacher/counselor recs of the Common App? Is it important that I send my online app first before letting them send their recs in?

Thanks in advance

Crystal: Teachers have different timetables. Some do it quickly, others don’t. The teacher forms all have the commonapp ID on the bottom of the page, so if a teacher’s rec gets to the college before you submit your app, a file will be opened based on that number as well as your name, school etc . Last year my D found out that one of her teachers sent the form/rec long before my D submitted. It was sent to a number of colleges and it turned out fine.

Moonracer: Honors for an activity.

How am I supposed to submitt the Rec letters ? Is the supplement submitted online ? Do all universities have a supplement ?

Everything can be done online. Check the CommonApp website. Most colleges have supplements.

So I have read through this whole thread and I have a question that has been raised but I couldn’t find the definitive answer…

Do the colleges read the application on-line or in a printed out form. For instance, in the activities section there is room for more characters in the answer than the box allows to show; however, when printed out those addtl characters are displayed.
