common rooms

do the common rooms have any lighting at all in them? or does that vary by dorm?

I'm pretty sure all rooms have some lighting. It's not always very bright, though, so you may want to supplement.

Too bad halogen lamps aren't allowed. I have one halogen lamp at home and it lights up the entire living room.

another thing...i'm in a 4 person suite so that means that the 4 of us share one phone number right?

Yes, but you have separate voice mailboxes. Frankly, landline phones aren't much used, it's all cells and IM.

litho-why aren't landlines popular? I heard that in the USA, you pay even when you receive a call on your cell phone, which is why im not buying one. (its not like that in Europe). Ill be getting a lot of international calls, so it'll cost too much

You'll have to be in your room to take the call.

and you have to pay to make outgoing calls, while on your cell phone most minutes are "free" as in they are already paid for. Also its a pain to remember your pac number

I did use my landline talk to my parents last year- id call them on the cell phone and theyd call me back on the land line that way i didnt have to worry about reception

Oh yes, bloody PAC numbers. Had to look it up every single time.

I was thinking of the typical American student. If you're international, you're probably more likely to use the landline, with a calling card, at least to call home. A lot of the plans here have free nights & weekends, or free calls to family phones on the same account, or more minutes for calling people using the same carrier, or other perks. Add the fact that it's not that expensive to the fact that most people spend quite a lot of time outside the room, and you've got almost everybody using cells.

That's not to say don't have a landline, but I only used mine the way ec mentioned -- to have my parents call me back. Sometimes also to call school offices and place delivery orders. If I were trying to reach a friend on campus, I'd definitely use the cell.

Never used my PAC... rechargeable Safeway calling card I've had forever was cheaper.

i was thinking of getting a prepaid cell phone that i wouldnt be using too much. just so that i can be contactable. how does that sound?
