I skipped 2 grades when I was younger and will be graduating highschool at an age significantly younger than all my peers. I swear if you met me in person you wouldn’t be able to tell any difference between me and my friends, but I’m worried about the essay painting a picture of me as a little, socially-awkward kid (which is honestly the opposite of who I am).
If I can work in leadership and personality, would this be a good thing to write about or no?
I think you want to be careful not to paint that picture you suggested. While I’m not saying you should try to hide your age, the more you mention it, the more it comes across as being an issue.
@JustOneDad and I understand that. I have some other things that I could write about, it’s just that this is the one thing I feel is extremely unique to me. Regardless of that, you think I shouldn’t write about age?
No matter how unique you feel it is, you won’t get admitted because of your age, you will get in despite it. If you feel it is the strongest thing defining you, then go ahead, but I’ve already weighed in on that.
I was thinking about putting a twist on the prompt and writing about how through leadership, an affable personality, etc. I haven’t let it define me. Almost making it seem like an obstacle I’ve overcame. Would that change anything?
@JustOneDad
…Mayyyybeee? The only area in which I could see young age really being a disadvantage or obstacle is in terms of social life. You would have to convince me (and possibly adcoms) that being a few years younger than your peers is an obstacle on-par with illness, socioeconomic disadvantages, etc.
