Commonapp Essay different versions for transfers

Hello, I am a sophomore business major and I am applying to transfer to 6 different schools this fall. Some of them are liberal arts and some of them are business, as well as small and large. I want to be somewhat specific with the common app and at least group them differently (one version for business schools, one version for LAC, etc), and I am aware that I can change the essay in between versions. However, commonapp indicates that it should only be used for grammar or minor changes - what should I do ?

Here’s my take. The CA was developed to help simplify the application process for both students and colleges. It’s not the CAs place to determine what you send, it’s up to the colleges to stipulate those requirements. And the colleges don’t care if you send a different essay to another school, they know that you’re applying to a range of schools and what they care about is what you like about their school.

You’re sending the applications, so it’s your decision on whether to follow the CAs instructions or not. But I can tell you that the CA has always make this statement and fr and transfer applicants (including both my kids) have always sent multiple essays, and nobody cares.

Another question - My father passed away my senior year of high school around college application time , and his illness leading up to that point required me to help a lot more around the house including needing to work a part time job to provide my transportation and some of my living expenses. I had less time for EC involvement and classes at this time.

I understand that death is a topic probably best stayed away from in college essays, and I do not want to give an impression of using my father’s passing as an excuse for lower grades/involvement. Would this be something prudent to include in additional materials

Yes, I agree that you want to keep your essays positive and showing your unique qualities. I think there are two options for addressing the issue of your dad’s death and it’s affect on your sr year:

If a school requires the Final report from your HS GC, you could have them discuss your situation.

A straightforward paragraph about your circumstances in the Additional Information section.

Thank you very much, I will PM you with a couple other questions
