Commonapp. Is major choice binding?

I am asked this question in the commonapp application. But I still have not decided between electrical and civil engineering. I can choose undecided Engineering, but won't that hurt my chances? Should I decide now? Or should I just decide on one for now and it is not going to be difficult to change it later?

"What academic program at Georgia Institute of Technology interests you?"

If it’s between two engineering programs, then it’s not an issue. US colleges, by and large, do not require 17YOs to go all in for a college major.

Actually, it depends on the school. Go to the school’s web site and search for “change major”.

For Georgia Tech, changing major depends on the policies of the major being changed into. For example, if your destination major is mechanical engineering, the rules are here: [Change Your Major | The George W. Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering](http://www.me.gatech.edu/undergraduate/ug-curr/change_major)

Even in that case, though, the choice of a major on the Common Application isn’t absolutely binding. It’s not as if, because you wrote “civil engineering” on an application when you were 17, you’re stuck in that discipline for life.

Changing one’s major is possible, even if some particular changes may be difficult to make.
