Urgent Question about Majors/Academic Programs!!!

Hi all,

I’m applying to NC state university and in its question section on Common App it requires declaring a first and second choice academic program. It also requires you to discuss reasons for pursuing the major/academic program in an essay (I wonder if academic programs and majors are synonymous). My question is about inputting these first/second choices: are they binding or can you change your program after you get admitted? I’m asking this because I’m interested in doing something either in business or even engineering. I probably have a better aptitude towards business, but NCSU allows engineering (on common app) in the form of an engineering first year program as the first choice and I don’t know if you can do engineering beyond first year. It’s also one of the best engineering schools in the country so it could be competitive, so would I get rejected from NCSU as a whole since it has a competitive engineering college? I’m in state and have a 700 in the SAT math secrion. I’m in ap calculus, sort of failed the ap physics 1 exam. I’m a strong student other than that and I could get in undeclared. What should I do because I do have to write an essay on my particular major (not sure if major(s)).

To clarify, if I want to study engineering at NCSU do I need to write that specifically on the application?

Yes. They want to know what you want to study, and your reasons for choosing to apply to their program for that major.

Yes, I would include that on your application and explain why you chose that major.

You can still change school (internal transfer) or major later on. Nothing is really binding after all.
