I need help deciding between Cornell Communication and Northwestern School of Communication.

Anybody with insight have any opinions?
I posted this on the Northwestern forum a few days ago and I got a lot of opinions, but they were all biased toward Northwestern. Now I hope to hear from Cornell voices.

Any help would be appreciated.

(Sorry for the brevity - I'm in passing period right now...)

Well, Northwestern is more applied and has a lot more breadth (film, dance, language pathology, etc.), whereas Cornell is more theory – the Cornell department is essentially applied psychology. The two departments are significantly different in scope and direction.

A lot of the programs at Northwestern you would actually have to find outside of the Communication department at Cornell (e.g. film, theater, screenwriting).

CR-- my transfer is for Cornell’s COMM major. I’m actually interested in Journalism though…is that the major that Cornellians aspiring to be Journalists usually gravitate towards? I know that clips/experience are generally more important than coursework for getting a job/internship, but COMM seemed like the best route for Journalism…right?

at a school like cornell you dont have to major in comm. to do journalism…

just depends on what type of journalism you want to do…

i would think that comm. is more about the logistics of journalism/media…

Not at Cornell. At Cornell the Comm department explores how humans interact and communicate with one another.

I think you major in anything and go into journalism/media – friends of mine from Cornell who went into journalism were comparative literature, political science, sociology, biology, and communication. What’s more important is that you start writing a lot – for the Daily Sun, for Kitsch, etc.

I’ve already been working at my current school’s paper (I think we are in the top 5 for circulation in the country), and have been published at least twice a week every week this year. Hopefully that will help me get in to the Sun… Kitsch is only 2x a year though, right? Are there any other Cornell/Ithaca based publications I should look in to?

there are loads of student publications on campus…

although you’re probably interested in NEWS rather than editorial/political type stuff…

I’m interested in law school afterward, if that’s any insight. I plan on studying Communication Studies.

Cornell also has the Department of Human Development in the College of Human Ecology. Any thoughts about how some of the majors/concentrations in that school would fit?

if you’re really interested in being a lawyer then your undergrad major doesnt matter…as long as you take enough challenging courses and you learn how to think critically…

for law school all that matters is your GPA + LSAT

If you are interested in child and adolescent growth/psychology or social/family policy, that would be the place for you.

I understand that Northwestern has the more renowned School of Communication. However, the emphasis of its greatness seems to be put on R/TV/F and similar programs. My major would be Communication Studies. In that case, should the renown of Northwestern’s SoC be a significant factor in my choice between Cornell and Northwestern?

Keep in mind that I am seeking a communication degree with the intention of going to law school afterward - obviously not something related to business/corporate communication.

Because you are interested in law school, I don’t think it matters either way. Simply decide if you would rather spend your time in Evanston or Ithaca. If you are more interested in Communication Studies/Theory, Cornell is a very good place for that.
