I’m a community college student, and I am planning on transferring in two years with a degree in Economics. Are there any schools that would be a good fit for me? I will have about 3.3 transfer GPA, and I am a resident of California-so I have access to TAG for some UC schools.
While being realistic with my GPA, what are some schools that I could get into with my given stats?
My list includes some public and private schools:
UC Davis-match W/TAG
UC Irvine-reach
Saint Mary’s College-match
Austin College-match
Whitman College-reach
University of Nevada, Reno-match
http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/infocenter/transfer-admissions-summary indicates that, for 3.20-3.59 GPA transfer applicants from California community colleges, the 2014 admission rate to UCD is around 71% and admission rate to UCI is around 62% (it appears that most UCs other than UCB, UCLA, and UCSD are in this range). However, since selectivity can vary by major, and this table does not include specifying admit rate by major as well as campus and GPA, it may not be accurate for your specific major.
Many CSUs are likely to admit you.
If you want to go on to PhD study in economics, you may want to favor schools with more math-intensive intermediate economics courses like UCSC, UCI, UCSD, and UCB. But you will need to take additional math before transfer (multivariable calculus, linear algebra, differential equations) and upper division math and statistics after transfer (proof-based linear algebra, real analysis, calculus-based probability theory, etc.).
Check the net price calculators on schools of interest. Out-of-state publics tend not to give good financial aid, and some privates give worse financial aid to transfers than frosh (and merit scholarships are generally much less available to transfers).
ucbalumns, thanks for the reply. I’m not going for the PhD route, but I may end up looking to take the CPA exam in the future. Do the WUE scholarships apply to transfer students? I’m trying to find the best “fit.” I know a lot of people in CC are very ambitious, where I’m more average.
I don’t think I would get into UCSD or UCB because of my grades, but should I still apply for UCI? I am not sure if I will get in.
