I am currently attending CSM (College of San Mateo) in pursuit of a Economics major. Im gonna apply UCSD, UCD, UCB, and UCLA for the fall of 2010. As of right now I have a overall GPA of about 3.7 - 3.75, and will be completed with exactly 60 transferable units by the end of spring 2010. What are my chances of getting accepted to each of the 4 institutions, given that I am going to submit a fairly decent personal statement? ( I have also done some volunteer work for the past few summers and gotten Dean's List awards for high GPA and golden state merit award in high school).

Also, what are some good topics to talk about in my personal statement for the prompt that asks why I chose my major?

I think you’re easily in at UCSD and UCD and have a very good shot at UCB and UCLA.

I’m also applying to UCD, UCSD, and UCLA. I’m a Psych major with a 3.57 GPA and 100+ volunteer hours over the past 3 months working at an assisted living center with the elderly and tutoring underprivileged kids.

I have TAG’s to UCD and UCSD fortunately, (I have 30 units done :/) but my dream is to go to UCLA. It’s going to be great to get out of CC, and btw I go to College of San Mateo as well.

I don’t know much about Berkeley, but judging by your stats, I would say you’re in at UCLA, UCSD, and Davis. However, it’s important that you complete the major requirements for each of your 4 schools in Economics in order to have a good chance of being accepted. Have you completed/are completing your major pre-reqs?

And for the Personal Statement: Make sure you clarify why you are interested in Economics, what you eventually intend to do with a degree in Economics, and how you’ve shown not just initiative, but actual work (whether volunteer, projects, or anything) in Economics.
