Community College Course over Summer?

My son will be coming into UA with only 14 AP credits (assuming he passes the AP tests - AP World Hist and AP Physics). Any thoughts as to whether it would be beneficial for him to take a class or two over the summer at a community college - and if so - what are the best types of classes to take to fulfill requirements? He will be a computer science major.

wdaveo- is he going to go to OA or AA? If so, you might want to check the dates to make sure they will not overlap at the end.

My son is going into CS also, and was tyring to decide what to take this year as a senior at CC. He decided that he did not want to take any more CS classes (he has credit for AP CS A) before he got to UA. So he focused on math and other gen ed classes. If your son really wants to take classes, and they will not interfere with graduation plans, vacation, and school starting, think about any gen ed class that may be challenging for him that he can get out of the way. If it is english/lit, take a 200 level english lit. Or take the other nat science he will need. Use the flow chart on the CS website at UA and cross of the courses he has taken care of and see what is left over. That may help him/you decide.

My son did not want to take CS classes because he wanted to learn from UA, and not feel like he had any gaps in his education because he took too many CS courses elsewhere.

If your son does not have CS A Ap credit, he may consider some of the entry level CS courses. They may even have those in the short summer sessions that CC’s have. Those are pretty basic and universal.

Does your CC operate 2 sessions? One earlier in the summer and one later?

If your CC does operate 2 sessions, then the first one shouldn’t be a problem with OA or AA. If your CC only operates 1 session, then check the end date.

Which AP classes will he have credit for?

If he doesn’t have the following credits, he might take:

Frosh Comp I
A fine arts class

Just looked up the summer schedule for the CC here…it looks like the classes are going to run too late into August.

we have that problem here too, wdaveo. Soemtimes they have shorter session for some classes. But not all.

Before registering for any summer courses, make sure that they will transfer to UA https://ssb.ua.edu/pls/PROD/rtstreq.P_Searchtype</a>.</p>

Remember that with summer courses, especially those used for core requirements outside the student’s major, prestige does not matter. As long as the school is regionally accredited, UA accepts the credits, and the student will get a good grade in the course, take needed courses at whatever college/university offers the best schedule, price, and campus life, if applicable. If another community college or state university offers a needed online course that will transfer to UA, take that.

Remember that if your student plans on going to grad school, many schools require transcripts, sometimes two, from EVERY college/university ever attended, even if it was just for summer classes.

I would double check the dates of CC courses. Some courses only run 8 instead of the full 10 weeks, and others are internet based (so flexible). I just checked out an economics course…but at $1000, whew, that is not going to happen for us. It is tempting to cram in something over the summer (thus freeing up a tight engineering UA schedule), but when scholarships are paying for UA courses…hmmmm, we’re going to wait and take it all at UA.

look into online classes at new mexico community colleges. i don’t remember the details, but i think there was a good option there.

I’m wondering if students who live in states with summer CC schedules that don’t finish in time for Fall classes, can enroll in distance learning there.

here is a link for clovis community college

Tuition[/url”>http://www.clovis.edu/TuitionandFees.asp]Tuition

Good deal…it looks like you can take 6 OOS credits for a total of $267…plus $9 fee. Is that right? Cheap!

[Shelton State | eLearning](http://www.sheltonstate.edu/future_students/elearning.aspx)

Shelton State CC in Tuscaloosa offers online classes. they would mostly likely easily transfer to Bama.

As MikeWozowski posted, some colleges and universities have special deals for OOS students during the summer or who take a reduced schedule. Clovis CC is a good choice as one can take 2 courses that are approved for transfer to UA and will meet core curriculum requirements for $401 ($267 tuition, $9 technology fee, $50 fee per online course, $20 student fee, and $5 for a transcript to send to UA). For those looking for history credits, it appears that UA will accept HIST 203 New Mexico History, which would be a somewhat unique course to have on ones transcript.

Remember that some courses may not be listed as being transferrable to UA as nobody has asked for UA to evaluate those courses for transfer credit.

I have to echo SEA_tide’s caveat about making sure the credits will transfer to UA. Son took an engineering class at our local university last summer. Before he even registered, he asked his department to evaluate the class to be sure it is equivalent to UA’s class. When he received approval from the ME dept., he went ahead and enrolled in the summer class close to home.
