Taking an Intro to CS course at community college over the summer, few questions

I'm very interested in Computer Science, but my school doesn't offer a single course on it, not even programming. So I'm taking an online Intro to Computer Science course via a community college over the summer. Will the credits transfer? It's both online and only over the summer. If they do, would it be advisable to use those credits to skip the intro class at UVa? Lastly, would this look good on my application, or is it not that impressive?

There is a transfer credit analyzer, google for it and then type in your course number/community college and see if it is listed as CS 1110 or just CS 1xxx or CS 1000. If it transfers as CS1110 then sure you can skip. Otherwise take the class again at UVA.

if you take a Java programming class, then you can take the AP Computer Science exam, top schools will require a 5, some will accept a 4. Taking the community college course looks good. Taking and passing the AP will make it look even better.

Would you RECOMMEND using the credits if I can though? I should have a solid foundation since that’s my intended major.

Also, the AP CS exam is pretty useless since it will be after I’m admitted/denied.

The transfer credit list online for CS classes is pretty incomplete (I’m an out of state student planning to take a CS1110 equivalent class back home, and I had to show the course description and syllabus to the director of the CS dept in the college to get approval since it wasn’t listed online). If it isn’t listed, just email the appropriate director (college or eschool) with the course description and syllabus and ask if they feel it meets UVA’s expectations for intro CS classes. Worse comes to worst, there’s a Java placement exam that you can take to place out of some intro CS courses. Just make sure the class is Java based since the intro CS courses at UVA focus mainly on Java.

If you really plan on majoring in CS, really try to take classes now. CS classes are high in demand at UVA and are extremely hard to get into (even harder if you’re in the college since CS is a core requirement for the eschool and UVA gives them enrollment priority). It’ll save you a LOT of time and stress, trust me.

@prg1126 Hmm, so what would be the consequences of CS’s high demand at UVA? When you say hard to get into, do you mean you have to perform very highly to advance to harder courses? Would suck if I got far into a CS major but got roadblocked by a rough class.

Also… dang it. I got excited because I saw I was going to get credit for it, but then realized it was only for the CAS, and not my intended SEAS. Is this[/url”>http://www.seas.virginia.edu/admissions/pdf/Transfer_Equivalents_2013.pdf]this the final say on SEAS transfer credit? Because that list looks waaaay skimpier than the CAS transfer equivalents.

Lastly, what eschool?
