Community college hours

OK, in the summers, my son would likely take some courses at our local CC or our local 4year U.

Is it OK for him to do that between graduation from high school and his first semester at UT? Or, does that complicate matters?

yes it’s fine

It’s fine. I took two courses at my CC last summer (I’m a freshman) and it didn’t hurt anything.

My older S, who is a sophomore at UT Austin, has taken and online Spanish class through a community college in Colorado. When he has taken the course during the summer, when he isn’t also taking classes at UT, the course counts towards the language requirement AND counts as transfer credit. When he takes it during the UT school year, it counts towards the language requirements, but the credit hours don’t count towards his degree. however, since we don’t want him to forget everything he learned from summer to summer and he just wants to get it over with, he is taking Spanish four semesters in a row. Make sure you fill out the required form to transfer the credit to UT BEFORE the class starts to make sure the credit will be accepted. Then, make sure to send the transcript to the UT registrar afterwards.

My second S, who just got admitted, has taken one 3-hour course based on a summer Israel study trip and will have 13 hours of Organic Chemistry at University of Colorado-Denver under his belt by the time he graduates high school. We will have to transfer the credits over to UT if he decides to go there. (He got accepted to Univ. of Michigan. We are waiting to hear about the honors programs in both places, but most likely he will go to Michigan.) I think the credits will transfer sort of the way UT gives credit for AP test scores.

Good luck!
