Hi I'm new here. This is my situation. I've been going to my community college for 4 years now. This is my fifth year. In my third year, my parents forced me to study machining. They said "the economy is down, why don't you study machining and get a career right away to support yourself." I had to waste 2 years of my college life studying machining major. I couldn't transfer because the machining major didn't require transfer to a university. I don't like machining. I ****ing hate it! It's a living hell ever since. The students there are mostly Vietnamese immigrants who don't speak a word of English or very little English. I'm the only Vietnamese who was brought up in America. I should be transferring to a university and studying a major I want like most people. What do I do now? I'm thinking of quit schooling or I'll have to spend the rest of my life working in a machine shop.

How much do you get paid machining . If its above 17hr or you see yourself at 17hr in a few years keep at it .

Even if you hate your job that sounds alot better then switching your major and going to a college . But otherwise I’d say look into transferring if possible .

It depends on the type of machinist in the field. There are two kinds of machinists, CNC Operators and CNC Programmers. Based on what I hear, operators get paid around $8-$14 per hour. Programmers get paid $30, $40, or more per hour. Everyone starts off as an operator first. As they get more experience in the machining field then they work their way up to become programmers.

I wanna say **** my parents. I’m just so disappointed in them. They have ruined my life and wasted 2 years of my life in a community college.

We’re only on this earth for a very short time, it’s your responsible to be happy for that small amount of time b/c we’re all gonna be on that death bed one day.

Study what you want to study. You should have ignored your parents but i’m sure now you realized your mistake. Good luck and remember that YOU are the writer of your own script!

Are you currently working as a machinist? What is to stop you from continuing to take classes at the CC, or enrolling in a 4 year school? You are an adult now. Adults make their own choices.

What prevents you from also taking the courses to prepare for transfer to a four year school? If you have been in CC for five years, you are probably close to age 24 when college financial aid no longer counts your parents’ income against you.

What do you like doing?

Thanks for the all the advice guys. I know I should’ve ignored my parents but it was so hard for me to go against them at that time. I was kinda young and a bit new to college. I don’t work as a machinist at all. I’m just a full time student just taking classes in college. Back then I felt I’m going to become a machinist for the rest of my life. That’s why I didn’t took the courses required to transfer.

My passion is art. I like drawing, computer graphics, photoshop, and making comics.

Well, with a passion like that it might be quite hard to get a job. Supplement it.

Graphic designers in corporate marketing depts or ad agencies make decent money. If you’re good enough. If you have enough general ed credits, you could transfer. Or go to a 2 year art institute.
