community college student: dropping class vs lower grades

My student is currently in community college; she wishes to transfer to a 4-year college, with hopes of earning a partial scholarship which is purely GPA based. Will a withdrawal on a transcript hurt more than potentially earning two Bs. The alternative is likely to be 1 B plus a W.

She needs to run this question by the Transfer Advisor at her CC. That person is likely to have experience with the specific target institution and will be able to help her with her decisionmaking.

I would also consider stress level. Sometimes a W is worth it. Also if she is experiencing a medical or psychological issue that has a diagnosis, she may be able to withdraw without the W, so ask about that too.

Thank you Compmom and Happymomof1. Yes, there is an underlying condition with a diagnosis. She is following up about the possibility of withdrawing without a W under these circumstances. M

A W doesn’t affect GPA. A low grade does.

W’s of course go on transcript and too many of them can affect standing and financial aid. A person who has a diagnosed medical or psychological condition deserves the accommodation of withdrawal without a W if the withdrawal is at all related to the condition or prevention of that condition acting up. Good luck!
