My situation: I am going to Northern Virginia Community College for a year and am trying to transfer to UVA after a year.

What should I be doing during the next year in order to get into the school? What classes should I take and what activities should I be doing?

Are you starting college this fall? If you do, take a good schedule (i.e. not all intro classes, and not too light) if you can. Muster up a good GPA since this is the most important factor, and commit to some ECs.
Since you are looking to transfer from a CC to a state school check with your school if they have some transfer program/agreement with UVA.
Start doing research on what UVA looks for in transfer students.
I don’t know if this helped. These are just some general guidelines for transfer students.

Tomorrow, pick up the phone and call NOVA. Make an appointment with one of the transfer counselors in the counseling center. They will be able to tell you exactly what you need to do because they answer this question every single day. It is their job to help you get into the best university in Virginia that you can.

Yup… I agree with happymomof1. It’s just that I also attend a community college (on the other side of the Potomac), and so far my experience with the transfer/counseling department has been terrible. At many cases I felt that I knew better than them about the whole process of transferring. But it’s totally worth talking to them and see what they have to say.

I know this is late, but doesn’t UVA have a guaranteed admissions agreement with NVCC?

Well. I’m currently a student at NOVA, and working on trying to transfer to UVA for the spring. I have done alot of research on UVA’s guaranteed admissions agreement and so forth. My suggestion for classes if you have not already registered. Goes something like this:

Fall Semester:
ENG 111 (3 Credits)
Foreign Language…if you can try and get in the 201 level. (3 Credits)
Science (Bio, Chem, Phy) with lab (4 Credits)
Calculus 1…I think its like MTH 167 or 173 (3 Credits) or Stat 1 (MTH 241)
History Course…I did HIS 121…you can do World History and their is a few others (3 credits)
Non-Western Perspective Course (3 Credits)…Google this. UVA has a list of transferrable courses at NOVA. Choose one.

Spring Semester:
ENG 112 (3 Credits)
Foreign Language…hopefully 202 level and then your done with it (3 Credits)
a Psych, Econ, Anthropology, or Sociology course. (3 Credits)
Science 2nd Part (4 Credits)
2nd Math Course…Calc 2 or Stat 2 would be my suggestion. (3 Credits)
another Psych, Econ, Anthropology or Sociology course (3 Credits)

This is 19 credits a semester (you need to get dean’s approval for overload), but if you did something along these lines then you would have 38 out of the 44 credit requirements for the GAA. I think this would be your best bet for a strong UVA transferable schedule. You can PM if you have more questions. Hope I helped.

I talked to a UVA dean of admissions and they emphasized taking the Non-Western Perspective course as well as Foreign Language. They say that these are harder to finish once at UVA and they like them to be already completed.
