Hello,
I didn’t do too well in high school
GPA UW: 3.1
ACT: 29
I had “okaaay” extracurriculars.
I want to know if I go to a JC, would Stanford still accept me if I do really well in community college?
Also, is it possible to transfer to a four-year college (like stanford), quicker if I finish my general education classes/credits by the middle of my sophomore year at community college?
It’s possible to transfer, but realize that the acceptance rate for transfers is even lower than for freshmen. They generally get about 1500 applicants and accept 25-35, or ~2%. Half are from 4 year universities and half are from CC’s. Your college transcript will be the most important factor when transferring to any college, for elite schools this is followed by your test scores, then ec’s, lor’s, etc. You’ll definitely need impressive ec’s or a hook of some kind to gain acceptance as a transfer, even if you can substantially raise your ACT. So few students drop out of Stanford that seats are extremely limited for transfers, so be sure to apply to a healthy number of schools, including ones that are not nearly as difficult to get into. With a 2% acceptance rate, just realize that the chances are slim if you haven’t done something that jumps off the page when adcoms read your application, and this doesn’t include just having a 4.0, which probably half of the applicants do.
@timmy06 It may not have been clear from my original post, but about half of the people accepted from the 25-35 are from community colleges. So there are about 10 to 15 community college transfers to Stanford every year. It’s definitely possible.
Hey. I’m one of those lucky few who has been accepted as a transfer student to Stanford. I wish I could give you better advice, but I’m not really sure how admissions does their decision making. However, I am proof that you can get accepted to top schools like Stanford from community college.
I don’t think graduating mid-sophomore year will do anything for you in terms of getting accepted tbh. You still have to apply in the Spring and then wait until the Fall to enroll at Stanford officially if you get in.
I had really great HS stats, so I can’t really comment on how having weaker HS stats will be viewed by Stanford. I think you may still have a chance, but just remember that they don’t want to just see a really great transcript. You have to not only go beyond that, but really stand out. The acceptance rate last year was less that 1%-- they only accepted 20 students out of over 2,000. It’s a long shot-- and you shouldn’t count on it at all, but give it your all if that’s what you truly want.
You do have to report your HS stats, I think. OP, go ahead and give it a shot – but spend some serious time researching and applying to match & safety transfer schools, too. Because it is a really long shot.
