Is transferring to Stanford nearly impossible?

I am currently attending California Community college but i heard they only accpeted around 20ppl last year? Is it true?

I heard that Stanford has one of the lowest transfer rates, after Princeton, Harvard and UPenn Wharton. So yeah that might be true.

transferring to any of the top 15 schools from a community college will be very difficult, if not impossible, even if you have a 4.0 gpa. This is because you are competing against people going to other top UNIVERSITIES with very high gpa's. Community colleges have hugely inflated gpa's in comparison to universities, and admissions officers know that. By the way, I know this because I worked at a university admissions committee for quite a while, and I took CC classes in high school

Yes , LY they only took 20. Here is a link to the Common Data set

Stanford University: Common Data Set 2006-2007

yah the admission for Stanford is brutal.... no point of applying.. lol

There's always a point in applying. No one who applies to Stanford is "definitely" going to get in. They turn away a lot of 4.0, tri-lingual students. There ARE schools in this country that value the type of person you are, not just what your GPA is. If you feel Stanford is right for you, ignore what everyone else says, and argue (the hell out of) your case on your application. We're talking about admissions "chances" here, not admissions guarantees. Take the risk. Isn't it worth it if you get in? And even if you don't - you still took the chance, you still worked hard to be worthy of applying. That's a goal in itself.

You probably won't get in, but you won't know for sure unless you try.

Hey Torrancecali, I'm also from a California Community College and am applying to Stanford for Fall '08. I met with admissions this summer and they encouraged me to apply. It's not pointless to apply if you are qualified. 99.99% of CCC students are not. They accepted one person last year from one of the CCCs (West Valley) I attend. If you scored very high on the SAT (try at the very least 2200 or better) and have outstanding accomplishments outside of the classroom, they will give you consideration. I'm retaking the SAT and expect to score about 2200. I highly doubt I'll get in, but it's making me work very hard and is consequently giving me a better chance for all the other schools I'm applying to.

Depends on your profile Its not impossible, although the UCs (UCLA, Cal) are much more transfer friendly.

They have admitted 20 but beware. Not all 20 were from schools "lesser" to Stanford. In every applicant pool, there is some MIT guy who has despised the winter of Boston, a Chinese math genius that has gone unnoticed and is now studying in the University of Missouri. I mean, yes, they did take 20 but many of this 20 were already people they would have admitted.

Therefore, I am afraid that I can't be so optimistic about a community college student or actually for any below Top 20 student for transferring to Stanford.

I think most schools have established the CCs are perfectly adequate in their preparation of their students. I'm pretty sure UC Berkeley would give preference to their Ivy League transfer students if they didn't feel that the CCC students were well-enough prepared.

You have no idea what those transfer admits are like. If you fall within the criteria to apply to Stanford, do so.

"I'm pretty sure UC Berkeley would give preference to their Ivy League transfer students if they didn't feel that the CCC students were well-enough prepared.

Berkeley is a PUBLIC university that is required by Calif law to give preference to Calif CC students over others for transfer consideration. Who Berkeley or other UC's take as transfers has nothing to do who a PRIVATE university such as Stanford would accept as a transfer. In general, if you had the Stats/ GPA/ EC's etc as a HS senior to be in the running for acceptance at Stanford, then you have a far better chance for acceptance as a transfer than those who didn't. Stanford requires your complete HS transcript, and the HS counselor recommendation form if you apply as a transfer student.

Do you think I should even try applying menlomom since you seem to know a lot?

Reasons for transferring: Want a smaller environment (major one), Want the better research opportunities that Stanford can give me, want to take some advanced science courses only Stanford has.

hey collegehopeful78,
stanford is a big community...
this college is as big as a county in Silicon Valley area...so i guess your "want a smaller environment" won't work......
but your profile is really solid.....i hope i have your stats an stuff ><

I didn't mean smaller to imply physical size. I meant it in terms of undergrad size. Stanford is about 7,000 undergrads. Pitt is about 17,000 undergrads (2.5 times as large). I feel I would get more attention at Stanford.

Did you apply last year? if not, sure give it a try. Just don't be shattered if you aren't accepted. Because Stanford's Freshman class was overenrolled last year, that may also affect how many transfer students they can accept this year, if they also have to take fewer Freshman than they normally do. It's all about "heads and beds"- i.e. "where are we going to house all these new students?"

From the New York Times, April 22, 2007, "The Smart Transfer" by John Merrow:
"A number of prestigious private institutions encourage transfers. Richard H. Shaw, dean of admissions at Stanford, calls community college transfer applicants mature and interesting candidates. Every year, Stanford has 1,400 to 1,600 applicants for about 70 openings in the junior class. This year 26% of those accepted came from community colleges, he says."

so i have a good chance right?

If you consider an acceptance rate of less than 2% = good chance, then yes.

i got into stanford as a freshman applicant earlier this year, but had to withdraw enrollment because of finances (i was offered a completely full ride+extra) at a state school, but i don't really think i'm happy at texas tech. what are the chances for someone who got in the first time but didn't go?
