so I have a feeling im going to go to carrington collge cause they have a vet program there but Im confused if i transfer to a university in 2 years will i have to study the same major ? Im very confused
@breezy212: I will try to answer your question.
Carrington college is a for profit school and they offer Veterinary Technology and Veterinary Assistant programs. These programs will not have transferable classes to a Cal State or UC. This is not a community college but a vocational college. I would run far away from any for profit school especially if you want to become a Vet.
You need a Bachelor’s of Science degree in a related field: Animal Science, Animal Health Science, Animal Biology etc… Outstanding grades and plenty of hands-on experience working the animals to even apply to Vet school after you complete your Undergrad program.
You want to attend your local community college to prepare you for transfer into a 4 year university.
You will take General Education and Major Pre-req courses at your community college. You need to select a major in community college since to transfer into a 4 year, you need to take the required courses which are major specific for transfer.
Assist.org will list all the required courses you would need to take to transfer into UC Davis for example which includes the General Education and Pre-req courses. To be a successful transfer, you need to complete all these requirements. `
6 UC’s have TAG (Transfer Admission Guarantee) which means that if you complete the TAG required courses for your major along with maintaining a specific GPA, you are guaranteed admission at UC you plan to TAG.
UC Merced, Riverside, Santa Cruz, Davis, Irvine (most majors), Santa Barbara (excludes Engineering) are the campuses you can TAG.

For the Cal states, you also use assist.org for transfer classes. The Cal States offer an ADT for some majors (similar to TAG) which can guarantee admission into a Cal State.

So which community college offers animal science major ? Cause all the ones I’ve seen have bad reviews I just want to be able to gain experience before I go into a four year university
A community college with the worst review ever is still a better choice than a for profit. Which community colleges are within commuting distance? If you want experience, check with local vets or animal rescue groups to see if you can volunteer.
You’re right but what if that community college doesn’t have the major I want for university
The community college doesn’t need to have the major you want because ideally you’ll be doing your general education requirements and pick up the major at the four year college where you plan to transfer. Since you’re in Cali, there are very structured articulation agreements in place that you can/should follow for ease of a successful transfer.
Take the Gen Ed requirements at the cc then transfer to a 4-year that has the program you want. Your 2 year degree doesn’t have to be the same as your Bachelor’s degree.
@breezy1212: Since you mentioned you applied to Cal Poly Pomona and Dominguez Hills, here are some links to community colleges that will help you transfer:
Mount Sac: https://www.mtsac.edu/animal/
Cerritos college: https://www.cerritos.edu/transfer-center/includes/PreVet.pdf
What is your local community college?
I agree that you need to RUN away from a for-profit college because they will bleed you for dollars and in the end, you won’t end up as a VET.
I know this sounds harsh, but you are putting in time and investment to follow a path for your future. Why throw all that effort that into something that won’t get you to where you want to be?
I could go to mount san antonio but I heard bad reviews about it I think my biggest fear is that I dont end up transferring and I stay there for a long time
Why would you stay there for a long time? If you take a full load each semester you should be done in 2 years.
I am a local resident to Cal Poly Pomona and Mt. Sac. Not sure what reviews you have heard about or seen, but the California community colleges are very crowded and getting classes can be an issue. You need to be proactive and do some research on how to get better priority registration (joining the Honors program), be flexible with class times and willing to take some courses during summer session if you get behind. If you have the determination, you will succeed. Also it is not unheard of for students to take classes at several different CC’s to get in all their classes within a reasonable amount of time.
Since Mt. Sac and Citrus College are within my local area, I know many of my son’s friends that have successfully transferred from both schools to Cal States, UC’s and some private Universities.
I recommend you meet with your HS counselor and formulate a plan. You will be required to take some English/Math placement tests prior to enrolling in the community college so if you get your act together early and prepare, you should be all set to move forward towards your goal.
thank you for the info I guess Im just an over thinker and think the worse on Monday I will have a talk with my counselor.
Just remember that you need to apply for a community college prior to the end of Senior year. You will be required to attend a new student orientation at the CC and you will meet with a transfer advisor to help you plan your eventual transfer. Make sure you make use of all resources once you start at your CC.
I already applied to a few just but I just am struggling finding one that I think will help me wit like tutoring especially math.
All CC’s have tutoring services.
Here is the link for Mt Sac: https://www.mtsac.edu/asac/tutorialservices.html
ok thanks if you guys know any other good community colleges please let me know
I would assume you would want to attend a CC within driving distance? How far do you want to commute?
If Mt Sac is local, consider Citrus College, Chaffey College, Rio Honda and Pasadena City College. Cerritos and Fullerton College are also options. All should have the GE’s and major course requirements to complete your transfer.
I think I’m gonna go to mount San Antonio because they have a vet program there but I’m still gonna do my ge requirements so I can transfer if cal poly doesn’t accept me
