If you’re at a community college, you’re going to have to take at least one math, and two sciences courses. If let’s say you did want to get some of the med school pre reqs out of the way (as I am doing) you’d take calculus, general biology, and chemistry. Because the science requires one physical and one biological class.

Astronomy might be a little weird, although anthro might work. May as well knock out 1 general chemistry class, I guess. It’s not ideal, but it’d only be one course.

well, i thought i was going to take astronomy so i don’t have to take any of the med school science requirement.

This is the IGETC thing that i need to take

http://www.lavc.edu/IGETC.pdf

currently, from that list, i have these as my required class that i will be taking to transfer
English 101
English 103
Math 245
Music 101
Spanish 1,2,3,4
Sociology 1,21
psychology 1
astronomy 1,5
Anthropology 101,111

please advise what i should change. that list i made are the easiest class for me without interfering with the science class too much. i can take more than this, and any extra class you advise. and my major is going to be undecided for 2 years, then i’ll transfer as a biology major, since i like biology but i wouldn’t want to take it in college, because it’ll look bad.

You know, at this level of detail it’s a little beyond my expertise. I suspect you’d be okay taking one or two prereqs at CC.

So, I don’t know, what should I take before taking the mcat? I can always take 2 science class+ each semester, so I’ll have 4 science done by the end of junior year

Well, you should plan on taking the MCAT towards the end of your senior year. So you’ll need 4 chemistry, 2 biology (more can help a little), 2 physics.

So I’ll be right on schedule if i take 2 science course each semester or break them down at summer or winter session, I’ll just take all the requirement to transfer and all the requirement to take the required science class. Does that sound good? Or will it be too hard?

Again, I apologize that I’m a little beyond my expertise. The only wisdom I know is that you don’t want to take hardly any of them at the CC; whether you want to take ANY of them is unclear to me.

Generally, if you’re taking science classes, you want them to be “core” science classes. Astronomy might run the risk of being a little lightweight in this context. I’m not sure how these two factors balance out.

I’m just taking astronomy as one of my requirement class instead of the important science, as I would be doing those at a university.

I read that, and I quote

"Coursework

The commonly accepted coursework requirements for medical school include a minimum of 1 year of:
General biology
Physics with lab
General chemistry (inorganic chemistry) with lab
Organic chemistry with lab
Calculus
English"
by 1 year, does this mean 1 semester or 1 full year?
Sorry if I sound confusing to you, just tell me and I’ll try to clear things up.

It’s a full year.

Okay, thank you very much, this cleared up so much for me.
So I’ll try to take the requirement for The listed course.
General biology
Physics with lab
General chemistry (inorganic chemistry) with lab
Organic chemistry with lab
Calculus

without actually taking the course is basically what I’m best off doing right?

You definitely need to relax a little bit. You’ll be fine.

dang it, i just read my UCs website. i didn’t know there was a major based transfer requirement too.

To be considered for admission

the following pattern of core courses must be completed by the spring before transfer:

* one year of biology with lab for the major
- one year of calculus
- one year of general chemistry with lab for the major
- one semester in organic chemistry with lab

Strongly Recommended

* a second semester of organic chemistry
- one year of calculus-based physics

i guess i’m going to have to take it afterall? though it does mention something about student that have more than 90 credits.

or ill just switch major

Yes, I was worried about this. I think this is why some students go in undeclared. You could also simply be a different major – there’s no need to be a biology major to go to medical school. I did Economics, myself.

well, i like biology and math, but i also like art and music and their history, i don’t know how med school will look at those though, it seems easy…

yeah, so other than biology and math, i like music, cinema, art, french, theater, photography, sociology. in that order with sociology being the one that i like the least from the one that i like best.

Which UC are you planning on? Unless it’s CAl or UCLA they don’t necessarily require you to complete ALL of those prereq’s.

Ucla’s the one I’m aiming for

but i figure, if i get at least a match with UCLA, i’ll have a great chance at other school as well. i guess i’m going for music major, or art major.

sorry for the triple post, but i found that i really like biology, and would really want to major in biology, so i tried to make a community college schedule that would let me transfer to a UC…

i’ll take higher level classes, like organic chem once i get in the UC. how does this sound? this is as best as i can schedule it.

I don’t know anything about your specific courses but I’d be very worried that you’re taking too many of your prereqs – all of them besides organic chemistry – at your CC. This won’t be fatal, but it’s not ideal.

You have to decide whether you think it’s worth the tradeoff, since this is (apparently) necessary for you to be a biology major.
