Community colleges/ 4-yr Unis for International Student transfer with low GPA

My brother is an international student who enrolled at Georgia Tech for a Bachelors in Engineering in Fall 2011. Unfortunately, he has been academically dismissed due to a low GPA. This means he has 30 days to transfer his visa documents and records to another university/ community college before they get terminated.

While his GPA is very low (below 2.0 fluctuating between 1.5-1.85 every semester) he's quite smart and has a 2040 in his SAT as well as a 111 in his toefl. His highschool GPA was 3.67. His only problem was that he found georgia tech very difficult to keep up with academically. Unfortunately, being a transfer student, all colleges will only look at his college GPA. We hope that they understand his circumstances knowing Georgia Tech's reputation. Can anyone suggest community colleges/ 4-yr universities that will be likely to accept him as a transfer student with his extremely low GPA and international student status?

Wouldn’t any open admission community college allow him to enroll?

Thank you so much for your response. To be honest, being from another country I am completely out of my depth when it comes to information on community colleges. Could you maybe suggest some community colleges? I will definitely look into it to see if they let him enroll within the next 30 days. Thanks!

Georgia Perimeter would take him without problem and it’d be his cheapest option. In addition, if he brings his GPA up to 3.0/3.4 he may be eligible to transfer back into Georgia Tech after a few semesters, and graduate from there.
However, tell your brother than intelligence isn’t enough, especially to be an engineer; he has to be willing to devote at least 6 hours each day to homework/lab reports/reading…
If he doesn’t need to be in Georgia and doesn’t want to go back to Georgia Tech, he can check out Montgomery College in MD or Miami Dade College in Miami or Valencia College also in Florida.

Thank you MYOS1634…I will look into these options! Perimeter might now work out though because they said they can’t process his visa paperwork in the 30 day time limit.

Look at the other community colleges near Atlanta then - Atlanta Tech, Chattahoochee?
Check out Georgia Gwinnett or Southrn Polytechnic, they admit pretty much anyone although even they may balk at such a low GPA.

GT must have resources to help him. Try the career center or the counseling center or the Dean of Students. I’m sure he isn’t the first student with this problem.
