What are some of the best places that a current freshman could volunteer at that would help me learn more about Scientific Fields?

I also know that many people will respond saying "It's not worth it if you are miserable doing it" or something along those lines, but I'm personally just intrigued at learning new things especially if it's related to science. The way that things happen in nature or in our bodies just 'hooks' me. Although it may be early, but I am really looking into medicine {pharmacy}

Any help would be appreciated,
Thanks

Do you have any local universities near you? Some offer research opportunities to high school students. If you do, call someone in the department and see if they need a lab assistant or something along those lines.

EDIT: Sorry, I didn't read the beginning of your post. It's not really community service.

March of Dimes, which has a mission to prevent prematurity and birth defects and to otherwise protect the health of babies. You would learn a lot about genetics, neonatology and other issues by volunteering there, which could include starting a Chain Reaction club at your high school, doing things like organizing health fairs for middle school students.

Probably volunteering with any nonprofit related to an illness would allow you to learn things related to science. The same would be true of organizations related to animal welfare or the environment.

If there's a science or children's museum in your city, you could volunteer to be a docent, teaching visitors about issues related to the exhibits. There's training involved in doing such things.

out of curiousty- is it really possible to volunteer at the library

I guess it depends on where you live, but as Northstar said, volunteering at a Science Museum is an incredible opportunity. I would also suggest working at a park or going to Mexico to save the turtles.
