So I'm a senior right now in highschool and we have a community service requirement.

With a little under a month left to go, I'm currently short ~19 hours of community service, and need to get them done asap. Does anyone have ideas of where I could find and my community service done?

Try benefit walks, volunteer to work the water station, give out the freebies, etc., these usually last quite a few hours and can be very rewarding. Local libraries, shelters, food pantries, etc. always can use extra help. Tag along with friends when they volunteer so you’ll have a contact person which makes things much easier.

There are many things to do. Volunteer at a soup kitchen and serve food, play with the animals at an animal shelter, tutor kids after school, help restore habitats, etc.

Look for your local Ronald McDonald House or Boys and Girls Club for more opportunities.

Another question - would helping an elderly neighbor after school count towards community service? With this, I would probably have more flexibility to complete the hours during the summer, or during college breaks instead of rushing in the last few weeks.

just so you know, at Ronald McDonald you can knock out 6-7 hours in one day if you prepare the food there AND you take some sort of entertainment (play guitar, sing, bring games for the kids, etc.)

I play in a community orchestra. It’s kind of fun but it’s mainly because my teacher wants me to. Most players are not really good so that’s disappointing, but it’s my community service.

My daughter volunteered with a sports program for disabled children and at a local elementary school, working with the resource room and self-contained classes. Not only did she fulfill her community service requirements, she wound up earning a $20K over 4 years private scholarship for community service and a $2,500 CS award from her college for her first year. For her second year, she got a paid job at the volunteer center and for next year, she has the job again and a $2,400 scholarship based on her CS. She went in to the volunteer work because she wanted to work with children - the scholarships were an unexpected and very welcome gift…

I suggest that you find something you feel a passion about and volunteer at it - be it working with animals, children, the elderly or plants…
