Hello.

I have a couple of questions on community service. I think for my school we need at least 20hr + in order to graduate from high school. Right now i am a junior (school ended a couple of days ago) i want to get at least 100 hours + since i don't have a lot of ECS at the moment. I want to get most of my hours at my local library during this summer. I was wondering how i would sign up or would i just go there and ask? i would have asked my guidance counselor this but its already summer and usually when i go there there a long line and i would have to wait while. But anyways if i volunteer there would i need a signup sheet, and they would fill out how long i volunteered there? Thanks for reading and taking the time to answer my questions!!

Hi there!

Honestly, local libraries are really eager to have students volunteer for them, and so, I would go ahead and call them to ask. They’ll probably direct you on how to become a volunteer, and so just follow those steps to volunteer there. My school has a sheet for recording hours, I’m not sure if that’s how it works at yours. If there’s no record or log, then I’d suggest just keeping track of hours on your own and having your supervisor sign off at the end of the summer.

Good luck!

If the library has a website (our library does), it might tell you how to volunteer. The summer is slipping away already, contact them tomorrow (Monday) if you are serious about this (call if the lines are long there). You need to ask your high school if and how they want confirmation of your volunteer hours. My kids’ HS had a sheet that was signed by a supervisor with the number of hours and a description of what was done (a form). I wouldn’t worry much about that now, get it from you school in the fall and stop back to see your supervisor for signature once you have it. Colleges don’t ask for any kind of confirmation.

You can go online and look for their website, then call them. Or if it’s walking distance, just walk over. It’s really not hard and they have students who need volunteer hours all the time (well, at least where I live). I’ve been looking for places to volunteer this summer too since I have a 9.5 hours and want more. Just start Googling things, here’s want I’ve been looking into–some have age requirements but I"m trying to call if they could possibly make an adjustment for that:
Meals on Wheels
Homeless Shelters (often 18+)
Any local events, maybe some 4th of July celebration your city runs (some may be 18+)
Salvation Army
Other food banks
Hospitals
Habitat for Humanity

…etc. etc. Just think of some, Google for some ideas, ask around. It may take some diligence and confidence because you’re really putting your future into your own hands by going out by yourself and looking for new opportunities.

Thanks for your guys response! I will try to go online and see if they have anything online! If not i can ask my friend on how he volunteered there(which i should have done first) And ill probably email my guidance counselor about the recording hours.

Thanks!!
