community service

I am having a hugeee dilemma with this right now. I have a reasonably nice amount of community work, and I'm currently doing a tutoring program (6hr/week). HOWEVER, my parents are SUPER against it and are insisting I should come home and study for those hours instead...

How IMPORTANT a factor is community service truly, in the admissions process? Do any of you think that it actually tipped the scales in your favor? Does it only help if you have an incredible amount?

Community service can help when applying for scholarships....................

It depends what type of community service and commitment (doing it for a lot years). But I think community service on school nights is not worth it. It would be a better idea to make it an activity and do it on the weekends and/or in the summer. I think the key is to use community service to imbellish/add to your other extracurricular activities. It should also relate to your future major. Do something that could fit well into your college essays.
Also, the colleges that use point systems for admission count community service for a lot of points.

key club + nhs helped me a lot in getting awards/scholarships. getting into college on the other hand depends most on SAT + gpa

Yeah. If it isn't mandatory, don't put service on a weekday, unless it's Friday. My school requires everyone to complete 70 hours by the time we graduate from high school, so for us, it would be necessary to do community service. Otherwise, it really isn't necessary, but it does look good on the application. It may not be a huge factor for admissions, but it doesn't hurt, right?

when you are looking at grades versus community service, grades are by far most important!

If your grades are suffering (or you aren't working up to your potential) I would follow your parents request and focus on school work and drop the community service.

Beside hospitals and other things like boy scouts, is YMCA a good volunteer option for the summer?
