Community Service?

Hi all,

With my senior year coming up, this summer I'd like to do a lot of volunteer work (not that I've been lacking in other years, but this summer will be pretty easy). I was wondering if anybody has a list of good places for teenagers to volunteer. I'm looking for something I could do on a regular basis, as I like quality better than quantity. I give blood on a regular basis, so I'm hoping that that plus a solid community service activity will result in some scholarships. Thanks. :)

Wait, so you haven't volunteered except for donating blood? Is that even volunteering, period?

Oh no!! I was a camp counselor for two weeks two years ago; the last three years I have been a VBS craft supervisor. Also, I usually volunteer at elementary school events.

I'm just looking for something I could do the whole summer. :)

Yea my senior year is coming up and I need to do some volunteering this summer...I have absolutely none so far :(

Was thinking about special olympics.

Also might do some hospital stuff idk

I've heard that volunteering at a hospital regularly is fulfilling.

^
True.

I think an exceptional volunteering for colleges is to do the volunteer on a certain basis (ex. 2 hours every Sunday for the last 2 or so years).

What about a nursing home? I like the elderly... do they often have programs for volunteers?

I have no idea, giftedgothic. You can contact your district/school and ask if there are any volunteer opportunities around. I work at my local hospital and I enjoy the atmosphere. I've been volunteering since the summer of 9th grade (currently a junior) for about 3 hours every Sunday each week. I do about 8 or so hours per week during the summers (I believe more) and sometimes come in to do shifts over Christmas break, etc. when they really need people. That shows commitment to colleges and that's a "turn on."

Thank you, Cast. What exactly do you do as a hospital volunteer? I know kids in my school have done this, but I don't exactly know what your responsibilities are as a volunteer.

Well, there are a couple of positions to tackle. I know that at my hospital, you can volunteer at the snack bar as early as 9th grade, while transport as early as 10th grade (or it might be 9th... I forget). As well, I know you can volunteer by help writing prescriptions/organizing medicine in one of the departments (which I might do in senior year). I'm sure there are many more opportunities that I'm not too familiar with.

Personally, I'm a teen volunteer transport. What I do is take patients from place to place. This job includes discharging people from the hospital, taking people on stretchers/wheelchair to places like x-ray, catscan, ultra sound, etc., and even if the patient is changing rooms. I've been to places like ER for some-- you get the picture.
