Community Service!~!~!~! :)

I was wondering, what's a respectable number of community service hours? And then, what's an "ooh-ahh" number? And a "don't even mention it" number?
Thanks!! :)

I was wondering the same thing. This summer I’m doing about 50 hours at my local library this summer. I really don’t think that is all that much. Others at the library clock in for over 200 hours a summer. But I really don’t want to spend my whole summer in the library stacking books so…

On average, I do about 250 hours per year. I think that is a pretty large amount.

teamfrangela92, what year are you in high school? Cuz that makes a big difference. :D

What is a “don’t mention it”, respectable, and “ooh-ahh” number to ultimately present to colleges?

100 is average. 150 is solid.

I’ll be doing 400+ though.

fairy_dreams, are those “per year”? Btw, thanks for replying to all of my posts! :D

@ jsb: I’m a rising senior, but I’ve been doing the same amount since 9th grade.

Holy cow, teamfrangela92! Nice job!

So I’m presuming that fairy_dreams did mean “per year”.

Do they even ask how many hours you did???

I mean, when you apply for college, do they ask you to list the number of hours you did?

I meant cumulative  I’ve seen plenty of CC’ers with only 100-150 hours at the end of their senior year. It’s completely normal :]

Some don’t even do community service. It’s just something that is expected of applicants. So if you don’t have community service, you usually have to “make up” for it in some way (clubs, sports, etc…)

50 is “don’t mention it”. 150 is “respectable”. 500+ is “great!”. These are just my opinions after seeing too many applications :] haha

Thanks for using my silly little titles. :)

So, seeing how I’ve only got a couple of months until I send in my application, and I have about 50 hours now, and I do about 7 hours per week, should I load on the hours and try to get in like 300?
Is there no difference to colleges between 150 and 300 hours, because that’s a BIG difference to me! >.<

There is no big difference :] 150 is a good number.

If you can have above average ECs, there is no reason to kill yourself trying to do community service. Find a good middle ground. Colleges won’t think that you’re a terrible citizen just because you didn’t shelve books at the library for 300 hours :]

are you talking about a total 50 hours is a “dont mention it” or 50 hours per year because I’ll rack up about 200 hours before applying to colleges but only will do around 50 hours per year

I’m talking cumulative. In my opinion, 200 is a really solid number. 50 hours a year is doable, easy, and it really adds up.
