Community Service

I'm planning on taking a year off college to serve as a community volunteer, however if I do there is no way I'm staying in Miami. I want to go to Haiti, or maybe as far as Asia or Africa if I can. As I'm doing this for experience and because I've really wanted to, I've also wanted to put it in my application so I can transfer in the near future. I'm going to a state school because I don't have enough money, and would like to attend a better one in a few years or for graduate school. Would you recommend this? If so, what kind of organizations can help me achieve this?

There are organizations like PeaceCorps, but they prefer you have a college degree. I’m sure if you have some good knowledge or valuable skill they would consider taking you, so look into it. Just know you’ll probably end up doing more than a year with them though. You could also look into different church organizations in your area and see if they need any help doing anything. If you’re looking for a website with all different types of volunteer opportunities in the US and abroad, idealist.org might be something to check out. There is also the Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity, United Way, etc. depending on what type of work you’re looking to do.

thank you!!
