I need a good Charity/service org to get involved with!!

I'm a rising junior and have top grades, ranked #1 in class, etc but I don't have a deep connection with any ECs!! I was thinking of a service organization that I could fundraise/start a project for, most likely one against poverty in India or something to do with senior citizens or something. Something that does NOT require any talents (ex music or sports), only time and effort. Can you recommend any charities or organizations? I think it would be cool to become an student rep or ambassador or high-up person within the org. BTW I live in S. Florida if that helps.

Thanks!!!

i live there too!
are you indian too?! :]
if you are then get in touch with the local religious place, they’d probably go for the end poverty thing, although it’s a pretty tough challenge to take on. seriously. my religious affiliation has one of those programs, kind of. it’s not very involved and it’s quite useless so i decided not to join it. you can ask your about it, them south florida indians are mighty friendly.

when i used to live down there was this one nursing home a family friend worked at. :]

if you want to be a high-up person then go for the Red Cross Chapter in the area. If you stick with them long enough and if you’re an amazing volunteer person, they’ll take you into the higher positions. :]
[Southwest Florida Chapter](http://www.southwestflorida.redcross.org/index.php?pr=Volunteer)

you could also try out the florida hospital. you wouldn’t rank way high, but it is good experience and you get volunteer hours in because all of them are accredited for it.

and guess what?! no talent necessary! all you have to do is follow directions and be normal. your personality adds to the fun of it all.

You can make your own club/ orginization if you wanted to. Just talk to your local, churches or community centers and see if they will sponsor you, that is what I am doing. And if they sponsor you, it pretty much means you can say you’re doing it through such and such, that way you sound more legitimate. Then start to get some of your friends in on it, have them get their friends, advertise for it at your high school and maybe the local middle school etc, my club does trash pickups, and makes cards for nursing homes, does community talent shows to raise money for people around my town, the money will be used to help buy food and such during holiday seasons that will be given out for free by the church to low income families.

I reccommend using volunteermatch.org

It really is great =]

Try Habitat for Humanity. There should be lots of builds you can go on in Florida – or you could go to New Orleans. You do not have to be good at construction to participate.
