Commute from Sacramento to UCD

I currently have a house in Sacramento, and I am debating whether I should rent an apartment near Davis or just commute by car. Does anybody have any insight on what I should do?

Move to Davis.

Rent is relatively cheap there and doing the 15 minute drive and the 15 minute parking routine every morning will get old very, very quickly.

The town is so small and the roads are so flat that even if you live on the far side it’s easy to ride a bike there.

Rent in Davis is not cheap unless you’re willing to live in a small place with a lot of people. I live in Davis and commute to Sacramento every day for work (over the summer) and school. It isn’t bad once you get the hang of it, but it’s up to you. I think it really depends on how much you’re trying to connect with other students, etc. If you have a social life in Sac, it’s definitely worth the commute IMO.

I’m worse off than you and Live up in El Dorado Hills so commuting really isnt an option as I don’t drive a prius.

I will however say that for networking reasons moving to Davis is a good idea.

Sacramento is a big city where mid-town traffic can be bad so it depends on where your house is in Sacramento. If you live in West Sacramento and the commute to Davis is simply crossing the I-80 causeway over the Yolo Bypass than living in Sacramento would be a good choice. If you live in the Eastern part of Sacramento, while you would be very close to CSU Sacramento, a commute to UC Davis is a fair distance through some pretty bad traffic.

What do you mean by “have a house” in Sacramento? Do you own a house in Sacramento, or are you renting a house in Sacramento? Keep in mind other options for commuting; namely, some combination of bicycle, Yolobus, UCD med center shuttle bus, and carpooling.

I’m going to be living in the Tahoe Park/Colonial Heights area of Sacramento and commuting into campus five days a week. Probably taking either the med center shuttle or Yolobus, depending on how much I want to avoid the shuttle fare and whether I can reliably get a spot on the bike rack.

I think it really depends on where you are in Sacramento and how easy it is to commute. As Lemaitre1 said, if you’re in West Sac, commuting should be relatively painless. If you’re within walking distance of the capitol area or the med center, you can take the bus. Otherwise, you could try commuting at first, and then decide whether it’s worth the higher rent and/or smaller living space to move to Davis.

my mom owns the house which is located near Glen Eder on Florin Rd. I just Want the best possible option to save money on transportation. I will only have classes on tuesdays wednesdays and thursdays per week

Hmm. That is far enough out that I would say your only realistic options for commuting are driving or carpooling. Are you living in the house by yourself, or are you there with your family? Living with family can get old pretty quickly. Depends on the person. Roommates can be just as bad or worse, of course.

If I were you, I’d be looking at apartments to see if I could find a really good deal in a nice place with roommates who seem reliable and honest. The best roommates are often the ones who are really on top of things; they list their rooms for rent way ahead of the end of the lease, and they get them rented out quickly. Some of the best apartments don’t get listed anywhere because they get filled by friends-of-friends and by word of mouth. Look on Craigslist, bulletin boards, ask around campus, tell everyone you know that you’re looking for an apartment. Maybe the right opportunity will come along that’s better than you expected.

I’m debating now about commuting from Sac to Davis. I’m from the east coast originally and I’m used to traveling distances during early mornings, so that’s not an issue. However, with my schedule of classes and rigorous major, I want to utilize all of the campus resources at my disposal, whenever I can and at any time I can.

And are you an incoming transfer student for the fall? If so, there is a Facebook page devoted to the class of '13 where students are connecting and asking questions, finding roommates, etc. Check it out if you want.
