well
'assuming' i do decide to go to cal.....and since i'm not a fan of the area
is it worth commuting to cal from sacramento? 75 miles?
i got there in 45 minutes on Cal Day...BUT i was driving an avg of 90 mph ;)
*the other option would be commuting to UCD which is like 15 miles away.

Cal is a pretty far daily commute. It's doable, of course, but how would you feel about it? Driving for about an hour daily to get to school? As opposed to 15 minutes, and a fairly different environment? If you can, I'd advise you check out the different parts of campus (the feel of Northside is different than the feel of Southside, for instance) and live closer to campus, or do the same at UCD. I think you should live in the dorms wherever you go for a year to experience them (unless you think you would utterly hate them and gain nothing from them). If you think the Southside is rundown and ghetto you might like the Northside of campus a lot more. Check it out.

the only reason i would consider commuting is because of the Persian Major that cal offers. i could do the pre-med anywhere.....but i would like to major in Persian as well. so a one hour drive everyday? ......and then going home to study? doable?

not doable.

I mean, people do it, sure, most often for jobs. I've heard of people who drive 2 hours to work every weekday. But it's not something i would want to do.

Totally nuts to commute from Sacto as a Cal student. Just get a nice $1,250 1-bdr suite on northside or up in the hills instead of wasting thousands of $ on gas. Or get a nice studio in North Beach and BART to class if you absolutely can't live near Berkeley...

I agree that it is totally ridiculous to commute from the Sacto area. Just because you got to Berkeley in 45 minutes on a Saturday doesn't mean that this will be the standard commute time on a weekday.

Though it wouldn't surprise me to find people in the workforce making that kind of commute, it just doesn't make any sense!

The only way (Marlene) Martinez could start teaching her University of California, Berkeley, biology class on time was to leave her Sacramento home a little after 4 a.m.

"I couldn't afford housing there," said Martinez, who gave up her part-time stint at Berkeley two years ago. "It was pretty bad. I had an 8 o'clock class every day."

is that how much a suite is in berkeley hills? 1250? with your own bathroom and all

Actually, you can get a nice 1-bdr in Berkeley for a little less than that if you look soon. While in graduate school, I had a separate very large studio/loft on top of a ~$2 mill house facing tilden park with my own bathroom, garage, big deck and private garden with hot tub. Life was good...

Check out the campus housing listings right about next week, tons of great 1BDR apartments free up now. If you stick with the area east of Euclid ave on northside, you'll end up in a super neighborhood with mostly great houses. Don't kill yourself commuting!

It would take you AT LEAST 2 hours to get from your place in SAC to a parking area at the Cal campus. It's 75 miles away just to get to the Berkeley exit, then you have to drive through traffic, which is horrible in the morning and from 5-6 at night. I work on the other side of Berkeley and it still sometimes takes 20-30 minutes for me to get to work. Its probably 5 or 6 miles.

mshetab, live in your car and park it by the campus, since in your other thread you that's what you said you preferred ;)

But really, the 75 mile commute is not feasible, you definitely need to rent a place that is closer.

Calx: where are the campus listings?

^^^Why are you even asking about commuting? You just posted about how horrible it is here, then you ask if you should drive 4+ hours a day to go here? What's wrong with you?

my last post i swear.....i'm tired of defending myself here lol
Gentleman: i was just considering my options....since i don't like the area and everything. however, i now see it was a bad idea.

Cal housing office.

listings at calrentals:

also, Craigslist (but more expensive usually because it's free to post) and a couple of other private housing listing companies.

mshetab,
If you had such a bad impression of Berkeley on Cal Day, why would you even consider commuting to Berkeley?? If you live 15 minutes from Davis, just go there. Good luck with your decision!
