Commuter at RH willing to answer any questions prospective commuters might have

I'm a Freshman (class of 2010), and I commute to school every day from Westchester, New York. If anyone has any questions about commuting, parking passes, or anything else, please do ask.

do you have a aim sn?

how long does it take you to commute to and back from school?
do you take any morning classes? ( 8 am - 9 am )
how involved are you in school? i wouldnt want to go school and go home immediately..
do you ever plan to live on campus? i would like to live on campus someday..
do you carry a labtop to school?
is it true that there commuters and campus residers live different lives?
where are the local hangout places in fordham? library? church?

The time of day determines how long my trip to and Fordham is. Since I do take 8:30 A.M. courses, I allow myself an hour to get there because there is rush hour traffic. When I have courses after 9 A.M., it can take me as little as 15 minutes to travel from my house to Fordham.

Because I am rather studious, I do try to get home quickly. If you want to be involved, you should join the CSA or some of the other numerous clubs Fordham has. Sometimes I do go back to the dorms to see some of my friends who dorm there, and if the weather is bad, I always have the option to sleep over in one of their dorms.

The reason I chose to commute is because I don't like the dorms we underclassmen get to choose from. After freshman year, you can participate in a housing lottery. The better your random lottery number and the higher level your class is (i.e., for you, 2011), the better your chance of getting a not-so-shabby dorm room. Most people aim for O'Hare after Freshman year because you share a private bathroom with three other students. One day, maybe I'll dorm. It also depends on what you value. I have a pre-med friend who constantly says she can't get any of her work done in her dorm (Alumni South) because of what's going on outside her room. If it's the social factor your after, I definitely recommend dorming. You just have to make the effort to go the library; that's where most residents get their work done (and even my commuter friends). As for now, I'm content with commuting because I'm easily distracted.

Some people do bring laptops. This is one of those colleges where most of the commuters bring backpacks because there isn't parking immediately outside of the classrooms, so people do put their laptops in the bags to go to class. You just have to remember to charge it. Not many people use laptops, however. I've probably seen about three students using laptops so far. It also depends on your instructor; if he or she talks like an auctioneer (which few do, if any), it will be in your best interest to bring one. If your schedule has a large gap in it, you might want to want to bring a laptop to get some work done or to occupy your time. Otherwise, there are a plethora of computers available in the library and in the language lab in Keating's basement.

You must decide how involved you want to be. For me, a lot of my close friends are commuters simply because you often relate to them more because they're from your region. It's really up to you.

Some commuters hang out in the Commuter Student Lounge in McGinley Center's lower floor. A lot of people hang out in the cafeteria, but I usually run into a lot of my commuter friends by the Millennium, a place that sells some pretty good food. Many commuters hang out there because of its location--all you have to do is walk down the ramp that connects the parking garage to a walk area by O'Hare's dorms and Fordham's main entrance, and the Millennium is literally right there to your left.

Hope I helped. If you have any other questions, please do ask.

By the way, if you take the Metro North from where I live, my travel time is between 22-27 minutes.

i have a MAC laptop, how friendly is the network..or Fordham, as a matter of fact, when it comes to MACs?

Just curious. .which town are you from amanda? I'm a soph. (upcoming junior) at rh and i'm from new rochelle. Nice to see someone else from westchester on this board.

My son has a Mac notebook and he has no problems connecting on campus. A lot of the students use Macs.

Sorry, it's final week, and I've been studying haha. I'm from Greenburgh, which is right near Hartsdale. I went to Maria Regina High School.
