Commuting as Architecture Student

I know that architecture programs are really intense and require hours of studio time. I hear these horror stories about architecture students getting no sleep and working 24/7.

I'm planning on going to a college that is about 30-40 minutes from my house and wondering if this would be a good idea considering my major.

I plan on getting to school at around 9:30 in the morning and staying until maybe 8:00 at night.

Anyone have any thoughts on this and if its a good idea. Will I be able to get all my assignments done?

Commuting to studio is certainly possible. If you have the discipline to get the work done at home you will be fine. The challenge is that you will be doing a lot of the work at home by yourself and will miss out on a lot of the interaction with your classmates. This is where a lot of the learning takes place, so get to know people in your studio and get feedback on your project. You don’t want to be that one clueless student who never got what the rest of the class figured out.

Interesting insight rick.

Each day I should be in class for about 4 or 5 hours.

How long on average each day did you spend in the studio, actually working on your project rick?

I was in studio every night except Friday and Saturday (unless a project was due the next week), so perhaps 8 hours on days I had studio and 4 to 6 hours on days I didn’t. Lot’s of cramming for the other courses on the weekend.

Alright, thanks rick.

So if I plan on spending 12 hours (between classes and free studio) on campus M-F and maybe like 5 on Saturday I should have sufficient time?

yes, if you are focused with your time that should be plenty.
