Commuting to Ithaca

Hey guys,

I was wondering if anyone knew any nice towns to live somewhere halfway between Cornell and Syracuse. Also, how difficult would a commute like this be.

Are you going to be an undergrad? a grad student? a faculty or staff member?

This completely influences the decision.

Either way I would probably advise against it. Getting into ithaca from the outside can be hard. I wouldn’t want to do it every day. Plus there’s a huge real estate market in the Ithaca area. You shouldn’t have any problems finding some place to live.

Cortland is basically equidistant and is a pretty decent college town. It’s certainly no Ithaca, however. I know some faculty live there so their spouses can commute to Syracuse.

I am extremely interested in the ILR program at Cornell. I’m an undergraduate, and of course there’s no guarantee I’ll be accepted, but I like to think ahead anyways. I have been accepted as a transfer student to a couple of other good colleges so far, along with my longtime girlfriend. We don’t think she will get into Cornell, but I know she can get into Syracuse or Ithaca College. She is a biology major with hopes of practicing medicine in the future. While the other universities she has been accepted to may have better biology programs than Syracuse, at least Cuse still has a top notch program. The point is that I don’t want her to turn down a more prestigious university for Ithaca College, but if anyone can enlighten me on the type of learning environment at IC that would be great.

My mom, a few aunts, as well as a girl from my high school went/go to IC. They all really like it, and Ithaca is a great place. The girl from my high school lives on campus, but my mom lived in Ithaca and commuted, but took the bus from her house.
As for commuting to Cornell, it’s possible, but it might drive you crazy. Parking on campus is absolutely ridiculously priced, and driving through campus while kids are walking is a nightmare.
As for a place to live between Syracuse and Ithaca, Cortland is about equidistant (30 minutes each way), and SUNY Cortland is there, and TC3, the community college, is near it. But other than that, it’s pretty dead.
But any way it goes, as long as you’re happy and no body has to sacrifice too much, I’m sure you’ll have a great experience.
