Hello,

I'm interested in applying to CMU to pursue comp bio; I was just wondering whether the coursework I'd be required to do would be any different if I applied through MCS rather than SCS. I've been doing some research but couldn't find much about any differences; if any current comp bio student could help me out that would be much appreciated!

Thanks!

If someone knows something about this, could you please respond? Admissions emails have not been returned yet and it’s been over two weeks since I emailed them. Thanks!

This is my personal understanding from the page linked below; no guarantee it’s 100% accurate so be sure to contact maybe the advisors listed in the Comp Bio section for confirmation. When you first get in, your first-year schedule will be constructed based on the GenEd requirements prescribed by the department/school you were admitted into. Each school has varying GenEd requirements. Once you applied and got into the Comp Bio program, you no longer follow the GenEd requirements normally required by your admitting department, but instead follow the GenEd requirements listed under the section ‘General Education’ in the link below. This is because BS in CB is an inter-college program and therefore has its own course requirements different from both MCS and SCS. Therefore when planning the courses to take during first year, you should keep in mind of how your chosen courses could fulfill the requirements of both of your initial admitting college (MCS or SCS) and later your final administrative home (CB program).

P.S. If admissions don’t respond to emails why not just call them. I see high schoolers taking campus tours every other day so I’m certain admissions work as per normal during the summer.

Oh alright, will do, and thanks for your help!
