Do first-year students who are interested in comp sci have to go through a selection process so that there is no guarantee to get that major?
CSC is part of the college of engineering. There is no direct admission to CS or any of the majors although every kid is evaluated based on what they put in their application.
All kids have to CODA after taking a set of core classes including their infamous weedout ones – Phys 1,2 and Calc 1,2.
This page has all the information you need:

The good thing is that most kids that join NCSU as anticipated CSC majors are more than qualified and do fine. However, trying to CODA into CSC from outside of the department is extremely difficult.
Thanks for the quick reply.
Would you know what happens to students who place out of Phys and Calc with APs?
They turn the AP score in a grade for the purpose of calculating the GPA for competitive admission to major. See the following:
Thanks! Will have to reach out to someone at NCSU when the time comes to get exact advice… Getting a “4” during COVID (essentially self-taught online) is only a B. Doesn’t that actually pull your GPA down and make you less competitive?
Yes, a B may make the student less competitive for admission to a major where admitted students typically have college GPA higher than 3.0.
Yes. That is the slippery slope for a lot of kids.
If the class grade is an “A” then stick with that and do not claim AP credit. Or, can retake the AP test if time permits/allows.
CSC is murder at NCSU.
