I am posting this as a parent of a current freshman that would have found this to be helpful to know as my son was
about to begin at NC State. Many of you may already know about these things but some may not… First, any engineering students that were accepted in a specific engineering major are not technically accepted into that major until they have successfully completed their CODA application which can only happen after passing a handful of specific classes. This includes Chem, English, and certain Math classes among others. Look up the page on NCSU’s site for CODA to become familiar with these requirements.
Also, regarding schedules…although most of the first semester classes are already chosen for your child, try to review all of the requirements for graduation. Especially when it comes to the GEP requirements, there are several different GEP categories which have specific credit hours that need to be satisfied for graduation. My son had several AP classes that transferred which was great, but the time was not taken by his adviser to see how each of those classes could be applied to satisfy some of the GEP requirements. As a result, they had him take a class the first semester that was not necessary to take since he had an AP class that should have been applied to the same category as this class. All I am saying is don’t assume that will all be handled by the advisers/school. Do your homework and make sure all of your child’s AP classes are being plugged into each spot as best as possible to maximize what should be transferring.
good information, thanks!
