Is there anyone who transfer to UCLA for Comparative literature major?

i dont think i've seen any thread about Com. Lit.

Now im in second year at CC and hoping to trasfer to UCLA for fall 2012.

currently i have cumulative gpa : 3.77
transferable gpa : 4.0

i took one non-transferable course during first semester of first year in cc.
(b/c i didnt know any better; at that time i didnt even know that it was not even trasfer to UCs; and professor lost my final paper so my grade drop A- to C+, so ended up getting C..)

Hopefully pull my cumulative gpa up by 3.8ish by fall semester... at least maintain 3.7ish

anyway is there anything i should do to transfer to UCLA for com. lit major?

im following IGETC but no TAP...

please help me out!

(by the way: is it better for me to join phi theta kappa-honor society in my CC? some said don't wast my money, and the other said i shoud... so im confused....)

i applied to UCLA as an english major (& was accepted), not as comparative lit. but i’ll give you as much info as i can, seeing as how we’re both lib arts majors.

if it’s UCLA you’re aiming for - TAP isn’t necessary, but it IS preferable as it gives you that little boost.

GPA-wise… UCLA’s incredibly competitive and is a topdog, so GPA is usually in the high areas. i had a 3.86 and i was accepted; but i wouldn’t depend on my stats to confirm you’re in because even 4.0-ers are rejected.

UCLA looks at a lot more than GPA. they’re comprehensive in their review. so that means - grades, yes, are important. but so are extracurrics (particularly those pertaining to your major). and your personal statement is also muy importante.

i never joined any honors societies or whatnot. because yeah, you’re a member. but unless you’re in a position of officer/leadership or actually DOING something, it doesn’t really count or matter. others will dispute this and they are free to do so. i’m just of the firm belief you shouldn’t join clubs/organizations that take your money and then you end up no doing anything in said org.

&finally:
5. are you done with IGETC? are you done with your major reqs?

You’re on the right track, I think, OP.

Last year, the average GPA accepted into the Comparative Lit. major was only 3.49. 24 of 59 applicants were admitted, and the average applicant’s GPA was a lowly 3.41, so keep at it, and I think you should be good.

p.s. dude, I just noticed that your TRANSFERABLE GPA is 4.0. I’m pretty sure you’re in. Don’t sweat it; it’s not like it’s an impacted major – and even then you’d have a great chance if you had IGETC completed.

@pseudonymos

I will be done with IGETC after Fall 2011 and i still have one more pre-req. but my CC doesnt offer that class for fall 2011. so i guess i have to go to different CC to complete that requirement.

thank you for information! i guess i will start looking for EC besides throwing $75 for joining honor society… haha ^^

@briceies

thank you for the great information. i will try best i could to maintain my gpa high as possible!

then you’re in the good. prereqs and IGETC are also very important. the more you have done, the greater your chances. make sure you choose extracurrics that are of your major (which are hard, i know. when i listed my extracurics, i felt like a joke). your PS, i’d advise, should focus on you (given) and your major; focus on your major & show your interest. speaking of which: can i ask why comparative lit? what career options are you thinking of? 'cause if you can answer those, then that should show in your PS.

you’re welcome and good luck! :D

comp lit is a small department/not impacted so you will be fine with that GPA as far as i can tell.

If I remember correctly, when you apply to the UCs, the application only asks you to list classes that are transferable. With that said, I would not worry about the C in the non-transferable course.

I personally wouldn’t stress about trying to become more well rounded with extracurricular activities. If you aren’t already involved in some ECs it might look forced if you start now. Not to say that I discourage you from taking on ECs, but I think at this point internships or a part time job might be more advantageous for you in terms of time. Once you transfer and start attending UCLA full time it might become more difficult to gain work experience while at UCLA. Even if you do get a part time job or internship while attending UCLA, the work experience you get now will only help you later in applying to future positions while you are at UCLA.

Also, the comp. lit department I think is quite flexible. If you look at the UCLA website for the major, they state that the lower division requirements can be fulfilled by other department’s lower division requirements(the literature classes, not the language classes), like that of English literature. So if it become impossible to attend a CC that offers Comp. Lit department requirements in the literature requirement, look into course that fulfill the English major literature requirements.

first, thank you for your kind consideration. since middle school, i always loved literature/english. there is nothing in the world that makes me happier than reading a books and writing essays. but for the career… i’m still debating myself whether i should stay in US and try for public school teacher or just go back to my country after my education. i still have some time until the application, so i will keep exam my chances.

you are giving me Huge hope… thank you<3

@liek0806

oh, really? b/c my cc counselor said, it’s school’s job to send cumulative gpa to UCs and those admin. will do the calculation.

and also i never thought about internships and part time jobs. thank you! between, i am Korean school teacher for my church since i was in high school. do you think this counts as EC? honestly i cant think of any EC that relates to my major…

if i can take other lit classes for fall 2011 instead of going to different cc, i will be soooooooooooooooo happpppppyyyyyy! yay!

thank you all!!

UCLA… here i come… <hopefully ^^
