chances for UCLA? (comp. lit major)

i'm in TAP, but I did poorly this semester and am definitely out for my first choice major.

Comparative Lit is my alternate and I would like to know what chances I have for this major at UCLA:

I have a 3.39 GPA. This is because I got an F this semester on a major pre-req, but retaking it this spring. I have a reason for getting a fail in this course and will explain it to them on the update. My grades showed a bit of a downward trend for the past 2 semesters, but before I got this F my GPA was at 3.71. I've gotten mostly As and Bs, except for this last semester which I got a C and an F, but i'll be explaining why I did poorly this semester.

I'm in TAP, did all my pre-reqs for this major, finishing the last one (which is the one I got an F in and am retaking). Taking my math transferrable course this Spring, and will be IGETC certified as well.

My ECs are good. Did many hours of volunteer work, In 2 honor societies, as well as other clubs. Was an officer of one club for a semester. I've also been on the student government board for two years. I also took an internship.

My essay isn't spectacular or anything, but pretty good enough I suppose.

You picked a bad time to mess up. However, I still think your GPA is competitive for comp lit. It’s not impacted a all, and like 60% of the dozen or so applicants that apply get in. You should get in to all UC’s except Berkeley.

yes, it was an unfortunate time to mess up. im unlucky like that…

I hope I do stand a chance…any more input on my case from others would be greatly appreciated as well!

Hey I chose comp. lit as my secondary too…just wondering what and where you found the major pre-reqs for that?? I couldn’t find it but all I know is that you should complete english lit courses.

There are no pre-reqs for comp lit at Berkeley. It says it on ASSIST.ORG. All you have to do is take lit courses that you like, and then definitely take foreign language courses or lit in translation courses if your planning on sticking with that major because you have to take literature classes taught in a different language in order to graduate.

i think you will be fine as long as you have a very good reason for the F. like one poster mentioned above, comp lit is not a competitive major at all. and i think your completion of all the prereqs definitely gives you an edge.

I might be a comp lit major as well trying to get into Berkeley or UCLA, but my GPA is a 3.0. I have taken Japanese 101-104 and I’ll be taking a world literature class in the spring before transfer. How competitive is the comp lit major? It just seems crazy to not have any prereqs for the major!

The competition is not that competitive, but they do pick the best of the bunch. Just looking at the average GPA for admits at 3.45 or something like that, indicates that it’s still competitive. 3.0 is pushing it. I hope you have upward grade trends and polished leadership EC’s. Leadership, as I’ve said many times before, is the key.
