So, the advising people tell me that CHEM135 is crucial to the engineering degree as it is a prereq for a lot of courses. Is that true for Computer Engineers? Because it really doesn't fit well into my schedule for fall and I'd like to just leave it for spring.
With that in mind, I'll also need to take PHYS161 in the spring.
Is taking PHYS161 and CHEM135 in the same semester suicidal? (I won't be taking any Math courses tho)
Thanks for your feedback.

I took PHYS161 and CHEM135 at CC together with a math course, it is definitely possible. PHYS161 is not that hard. CHEM135 is challenging because it has lots of material to cover in one semester but if you study and manage your time the subject itself is not difficult.

It’s not bad at all. As stated above, CHEM135 is harder than PHYS161.

It’s not that CHEM135 is a prereq for other classes as much as PHYS161 is. However, CHEM135 is a required course, even for computer engineers, and it must be “successfully completed” by 45 UM credits (first benchmark review from school of engineering). http://www.eng.umd.edu/sites/default/files/images/current/forms/4yrplan/2012-2013/comp-4yr-acadplan-2012.pdf

FYI, you may want to seriously consider making sure CHEM135 fits into your schedule for the fall. You want Vedernikov and he is definitely teaching this fall, but it’s anyone’s guess about who’s teaching in the spring since it does vary from semester to semester.

Sometimes, the survivability of a schedule depends more on the teachers you have rather than the combination of classes themselves.

The class that does make a semester more difficult is ENGL101 (at least for the stereotypical STEM student). There are LOTS of writing assignments (based on the complaints from my son). Unlike math and science, there is no right answer to how an English paper is graded - it’s entirely subjective.

What other classes are u taking this fall? If it really doesn’t fit well, then take it next semester. I also agree that MOST of the times the survivability of the schedule depends on the professors.

For Chem135, whilst verdernikov is the best, u’ll be fine with any professor EXCEPT Dixon. Under NO circumstances would I recommend signing up for her class.

All of Verdernikov’s sections conflict directly with CMSC131H (which only has 1 section)
My classes are:
CMSC131H
ENGL101H
ENES100
MATH246
HACS100 (new honors program)
