At schools such as Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Dartmouth, etc., this year has been the most competitive year for admissions ever. Can we expect next year (class of 2011) to be even more competitive than this? Has it ever been that the number of competitive applicants dropped after such a booming year like this year?

Keep hope alive 11'ers! We might not have to go through AS MUCH hell as the 10'ers... or maybe I'm just dreaming.

as for 2011 (which is my class), i dont know if it's going to be less than 2010. I do know that only the class of 2013 will the applicant pool size start to decline again... sucks for us, i know

I think it will be about the same if not worse, since in 1989 (the year most of us were born) numbers were a lot higher than 1988. Plus, GCs are still encouraging kids to apply to like 14 schools, so application #'s should be majorly on the rise. I'm really scared for next year, especially because there's so much riding on it.

Damn that sucks, I'm 1 year off of being in a less competitive pool.....Whats the outlook for 2012

hahahaha... that sucks so much for 12ers......well... I hope 2011 isn't that bad...I'm actually really excited to start the whole process, how about you guys?

same, where is everyone from? and applying to which schools? im from az, for top 20 schools, im applying to 7 ivies (no princeton), northwestern, uchicago, washu, duke, stanford

I'm from NJ and the 10 schools I'm definitely applying to so far are Yale, Michigan, Rutgers, Stanford, Harvard, Princeton, Columbia, Cornell, Chicago, and MIT. Not in that order.

the HS graduating class is supposed to peak with the graduates of ~2009 -- college class of '13, according to demographers....of course, each state is different, since the southwest will continue to boom long after 2009.

I'm so excited to start and just get the process done and over with.

I live in TX and the 6 schools that I will definitely be applying to are: Rice, USC, Brown, Northwestern, University of Houston, and WashU (not in any particular order).

^ I'm excited yes... but also kind of scared at the amount of work + balancing classes + life + everything. I kind of just want it to be done and know where I'm going next year, lol. Go class of '07~! (or 2011)

I live in MA and I will definitely be applying to Tufts, Northwestern, Brandeis, BC and UMich :)

It will be marginally harder next year with schools expecting applications to be up again. And true, the numbers will go down in a few years, but it not expected the very top schools will become less selective. As more people are now in on the "secret" of ivies and have access to them because of new financial aid initiatives, they will probably forever remain incredibly hard to get into. Another reason is globalization, more internationals than ever want to be at top American colleges.

The schools that will suffer after the peak are the average private colleges.
