Completing FAFSA and Work Study

There's a question on the FAFSA asking how much money the student intends to earn during the 2012-13 school year. One of my kids had work study for $2000 this past year so we indicated $2000 for income expected to earn next year. I'm now wondering if that was the correct amount to indicate on the FAFSA????? Will that amount have an impact on work study for next year?

Probably no impact. Work study will be based on actual income from the previous year.

FAFSA does not ask about projected income. I think that was the CSS Profile. I believe I took that question to be referring to summer earnings since my son’s only job during the school year is work study. I don’t think it matters too much though. For projected earnings I try to estimate low since things don’t always work out as well as expected, especially if the student has to wait until summer to find a job because school is far from home.

I’ve never seen a question on FAFSA about projected earnings.

Agreed with above, there is no question about projected earnings on FAFSA. Furthermore, work study earnings don’t affect the EFC in anyway so it should not have an impact on WS in the future.

This is true as long as earnings do not exceed the award amount. Both my children worked more hours in their work study jobs then was awarded so anything above the amount is considered income from outside sources just like any other job.

I’ve never heard of that before.

kels or someone else more knowledgeable will have to weigh in.

Part of WS always comes from the organization you are working from. I think the govt pays something like 66% or 70% and the rest is paid by the organization. The whole amount is part of the WS award.

However, if you exceed your WS award then it is regular earnings, not WS at all (unless the school ups the award). The non WS portion should then attract FICA taxes and it should not be reported as WS on FAFSA, It could affect the EFC if total non WS (and non taxable scholarship/grant) income exceeds the student protected income allowance.

The question may have been on the CSS Profile - I do recall there was a question related to what you expected to earn for summer earnings and another related to what you expected to earn during the school year. My concern is how much the school will now expect to be earned by the student.
