In the Student Tax Information page question 32 (for 2015) if a student is totally dependent on parents and didn’t have any income and unmarried, what is the option. I think option 3 “I’m not going to file.” is right, but not sure.
The question is asking about the filing status of a 2015 tax return. The normal due date for that return was this past April. If you had to file a 2015 return, you more than likely would have done it by now.
Are you completing FAFSA for the current academic year (i.e. right now or for spring next year)?
@BelknapPoint my question is if the student is a dependent on parents and don’t have any income for 2015 how can he file a return. If the student parents filed a return what should be the answer.
My son is filling up his FAFSA for 2017-18 college year.
If your son didn’t file a tax return in 2015, then the answer is ‘did not file’. Many dependent students file their own returns because they have jobs as 16-22 year olds, they have taxable scholarships, they have other forms of income. Not unusual one way or the other. If he is chosen for verification, he may have to sign a form that confirms he did not file. It’s easy.
You need to make sure you are using the correct FAFSA form. In your original post, you said 2016, and now in post #2 you said 2017. Both are available now, so make sure it is the correct year.
There’s a question for the student and a separate question for the parent(s).
Did the student file a 2015 tax return? Yes or no (or will file).
Did the parent(s) file a 2015 tax return? Yes or no (or will file).
Then why does the title of your thread ask about 2016-17?
