I got into Electrical and Computer Engineering at Austin and Computer Engineering(electrical track) at College Station. I got into honors at A&M(I know it’s not a big deal) but got rejected from UT. I’m not getting much aid from UT but A&M is giving me quite a lot. I don’t know whether going to A&M would give me fewer opportunities than UT, which is better? Cost is a factor but nothing comparable to the career options. What is the best college to go to for me?
Both are great engineering schools, you’ll have no shortage of opportunities at UT or A&M. Congrats!
Pick the one that you feel is the the best fit (considering cost and other factors).
Good Luck!
Congrats on having 2 great choices! Going to A&M will not give you fewer opportunities, IMO.
If cost is a factor, then A&M is the clear choice. They are highly ranked in engineering!
Thank You, but where will I have more opportunities?
Same opportunities at each school. They both have large, world class engineering programs. Both do a great deal of research (undergraduate research is available), and both are well recruited by many of the same companies. Both have great alumni networks…
Really, you can’t go wrong with either school.
Sounds like the decision is a no-brainer! Go for the A&M scholarship! Both colleges are equally top ranked CS/engineering programs and the degree is highly employable. There’s no more advantage going to UT especially for something as high demand as computers.
I’m biased, but I think Texas has a better national reputation than TAMU. Plus, the sixth street beats the corn field. If you are in state, both schools are dirt cheap. How much is the TAMU scholarship anyway?
Unless money is a significant factors, I would suggest that you choose one where you’re closer to your family / support network. In the end, the type of classes you take, your performance in those classes, and the kind of professional connections you build while in school, will help during the first few years after graduation. Afterwards, your work performance and professional connections start playing a more significant role.
@bogeyorpar I think that you have TAMU and UIUC confused. TAMU is surrounded by Mesquite trees, not corn. But no one expects someone that is biased to tu to know the difference. :))
Aren’t there less companies from the technological industry in College Station? Or are the hirings the same?
You are not likely going to stay in College Station forever. Yes, Austin does have a bigger tech industry, but they still recruit from TAMU. For some the impact that the Corps of Cadets at TAMU has is a plus, negative or neutral impact. If you don’t have an issue with the culture at TAMU, I would go there. tu has its own culture, but it is not a strong.
TAMU seems great but it is not as highly ranked as UT in computer engineering, will that hinder my career?
No, it wouldn’t hinder your career at all. With computers, the school you graduate from makes very little difference. A&M is a flagship school. Employers from all over the country recruit routinely from Texas A&M with good salaries. My brother-in-law graduated there with a computer science degree 16 years ago. He makes a 6 figure income. My brother graduated from SUU 20 years ago, and he also makes a 6 figure income.
UT Austin is still looked at more favorably than A&M … I doubt that will change anytime soon.
I am curious to which scholarships A&M gave to the OP @imutterlylostlol because the awards to applicants of all majors, were just being awarded this morning and an email was sent to all applicants yesterday that the financial portals would be down, due to awards being released today and would be back up later today.
Also, as of February 20, the OP is asking if A&M gives any engineering scholarships to freshmen and how much.
Competitive scholarships for instate tuition do not go out until April and through July.
As for UT being look at more favorably than A&M is an opinion by individuals and not a fact with employers. Anyone who says differently has never been in position of hiring graduates.
A&M and UT engineering programs are so close in rank that I would not let this be the deciding factor. It should really come down to which campus you like the best. For the most part A&M is a conservative school located in a college town. UT is more liberal located in downtown Austin. Greek life is more prevalent at UT while school spirit rules at A&M. Take a visit at both and commit to the place that is a fit for you. Do your part and you will have ample opportunities at either school.
