Computer Engineering Schedule

I was wondering if someone could look at my schedule and tell me if its fine. I plan on signing up for:
Math 20B with Yuan Zhang
Computer Science and Engineering 8A/8AL with Richard Ord
Spanish Lit 2A with Beatrice Pita
Music 15 (dont know the teacher yet)

I also want to take a seminar but I dont know how to sign up for it, does anyone know?
Finally I was also wondering whether Spanish and Music would count for 2 or 4 units since I intend to take both as Pass/ No pass, does that affect the units?

Thanks

I just counted all my units and it looks like its going to be 18 the first quarter, is that too much?

that should be manageable, but for your first quarter it might be a bit heavy so consider switching spanish or music to p/np. unless you need ltsp for letter grade, i recommend taking it p/np. mus 15 should be a breeze. cse 8a should be very time-consuming so expect to spend a lot of time in the lab. Ord is supposed to be a great professor. 20B will probably also be very time-consuming and probably the most difficult course you have this quarter. 18 units is a bit heavy for your first quarter but that all depends on the person. some like to take it a bit easy first quarter, whereas some like to jump right in. for a CS major though, pretty much every quarter is loaded and that’s just how CS is.

so overall, the only tweak i’d make is to take ltsp pass/no pass.

Thanks for the response, but would changing mus 15 and ltsp to p/np lower the units gained from the classes.

Taking a class p/np doesn’t affect the number of units you are taking. Generally beginning music and theater classes are easy so I don’t think you need to take it p/np. I’ve always taken four classes and I can never tell the difference between 16 units or 19 units. It just feels like 4 classes (to me) no matter what. hope this helped

Thanks for the responses, now I guess I just have to decide whether I do P/NP with Mus 15 and Ltsp 2a or just Ltsp2a

^You’ll get an A in MUS 15. If DeHart is teaching it, you’ll get an A.

CSE 8A with Ord is an absolute breeze, don’t even worry about it. Ord is, without doubt, the best CS professor at UCSD. Just do your homework and go to lecture and you will get 100%. The tests are very easy.

Before you get into your ECE classes, I would also consider talking to an advisor about the differences between CS and CE and your career goals. Many CE change to CS because they are going to end up in the software side anyway, and the class load is more manageable, but it’s all up to what your goals are.

Thanks so much for the advice guys, @ucsd2013 I have been debating CS against CE for a while now and I’m still pretty lost on it. Should I go to an academic advisor about it? I was kind of hoping i’d figure out what I wanted to do after a couple of quarters.

You can either talk to Ord about it during the year or talk to Viera in the CS advising department. I wouldn’t recommend talking to Pat. They say that you “get” a certain advisor depending on your last name A-Z, but just request to see Viera no matter what.

Does anyone know how many weeks after the quarter starts I have to change the grading option on a class?

I believe it is 2 weeks to add a class or change the grading option and 4 weeks to drop without a W.
