Computer for Engineering

We are in the process of deciding which computer to purchase for our son. He is planning to major in chemical engineering. Would love some feedback on the laptops vs tablet computers. What would you all recommend?

i really don't know what response i'll get for this..BUT...i really really like the new Dell XPS M1530..i think it's awesome..it has allthe features and the price is..well..OKAY..for some reason i just don't like Macs or tablet PCs..but it's just me.... :)..i think u should buy the Dell :)

Pen and paper still work pretty fantastic for all of my friends for taking notes in class. Computer lab computers will always be more powerful than any laptop he could ever lug around. If you're set on buying a laptop, I'd buy one that's as portable as possible with a long battery life and very little weight to it. My friends that had powerhouse laptops tended to leave them in their rooms locked to their desk, and found them to be about as portable as my desktop was.

i have a thinkpad, i absolutely love it, its light, sturdy, and works very well. i wrote a couple softwares last summer for a start up company, and they gave me a T61 Thinkpad, and its really sweet. dell's tend to be heavier, though the XPS series is nice. my mom has a tablet, its not really that easy to use for notes, personally, pen and paper works better, and typing itself for me, is faster than tablet writing.
