Computer registration

My son is a freshman in GSB. He got up 6am this morning to be ready to register at 7. He had researched the classes he wanted and some alternates. He is not an athlete or in the honors college (but is a good student). The website booted him off 3 times and by the time he was able to get on at 7:10 he was only able to get 1 of the classes he wanted. The rest of the classes he got were with either foreign professors (he says he has trouble understanding heavy accents) or professors with low ratings. He visited an advisor who told him he would not be able to get overrides and basically to 'suck it up'. He is very discouraged. Is there anything he can do? We were hoping that in paying high private tuition he would have a better experience than at our large state universities which are much cheaper to attend.

Discouraged? I don’t register until Monday and 4 of 5 classes are already closed.

Registration process is a joke.

If he came in with few or no AP credits–yes, registration for second semester is rough. It’s that way everywhere. Still, unlike at the state universities in my native CA, you’ll always be able to get the classes you need at Fordham, and advisors and deans are very accommodating to students with conflicts between required courses.

Some of my very best professors–in terms of teaching style, sense of humor, and general good-will towards students–have been foreigners with thick accents. Being able to understand Chinese/Indian/Greek/whatever accents is a useful skill, and it’s not one he’ll develop by avoiding foreign profs.

To get into full classes, I would suggest asking the profs teaching them to email his advisor/dean, rather than talking to the advisor/dean directly.

Some of us wake up at 6am even when we’re not registering :P

Thanks for the help. Since yesterday morning he has checked website multiple times and has been able to change 2 classes to other options he is happy with (by slots opening up) so he is much more encouraged. His hesitation for foreign professors is because he has one this semester that he just can’t understand very well. He likes the professor and has compensated by going to office hours which he says have helped tremendously. But it has still been an added challenge. Blueshirtrule - after you register KEEP CHECKING website and spots may open up. Good luck!

Has nothing to do with AP credits, Gabelli students register before Rose Hill Students, WHY??? Means a student from Rosehill with 9 AP credits picks classes 3 days after a Gabelli student with 9 AP credits. Should be opened up to all students equally, IMHO
