Registration Problem - need advise.

Son was not able to get his schedule done during Orientation/Registration.......it was the last session which was for Internationals. Since he has got Sophomore status, he was unable to get some of the basic Engineering classes - this took so much time that he lost out on the other courses (math and GE.Writ)

Now he is locked out of the system since the advisor is supposedly helping him.

He could see some courses open up during the last 2-3 days but could not register.

Have you heard of anyone else going through this?

He tells me that one GE/Writ is still open, name LA and the amercian dream with Francille Wilson and David Tomkins for Writing. Anyone taken this class/prof?

Feeling bad that he is having this issue.

Is he a transfer student? No incoming freshmen should be unable to get into freshmen classes even if they have sophomore status.

If he has already been advised there should be no lock… log in to http://www.usc.edu/oasis</a> and click on “Restrictions (Holds)” and this should tell you why he cannot register and also who to contact

He can take the GE/Writ in the spring, if he does not like his options. He should ask his advisor what other classes he can take towards his major now.

Thanks, Jb. Will tell him. Wish the suspense would be over. I do not know why he could not even register for freshman classes, at least the people there should have known. He was in there for 3 hours. Finally they figured out that the system was ‘thinking’ he was soph!!

also, he may have to get “D” clearance from individual depts in order to register. That is accomplished by simply calling the dept phone # listed at the top of each page of classes offered each semester. D clearance is required if the class # starts with a D. see below for an example of a class in the math dept that require “D” clearance…most math, physics, classes require D clearance, and in the future he’ll have plenty of time to get “D” clearance before its time to register…

The people at the registrars office are very nice and can help him with many problems, but they can’t magically get him into classes where there are no openings, unfortunately…

pixeljig
Did your son get this problem sorted out yet? If not, please have him go to his advisor in Viterbi asap!

He went to them Monday morning and got into a math class. Now it’s just ge and writ he has to find.

How is he supposed to know unless someone tells him that he can get D clearance waived by calling a number? ESP when advising says they will get it for him. I would have thought that they would handle this issue with ease. Took them almost week.

Something must have gone terribly wrong in advising. Glad to hear he got a math class. Hopefully he will hear soon on on the writing class etc. Maybe he should go sit in on one that says it has availability. Didn’t you say he found one with an availability?

There was an opening in the ge/writ, but it was clashing with the ee class. Now that one spot is also gone.

I seriously did not expect that this was going to happen. Math is everyday with the lab and the 2 other intro courses do not leave any room for ge/writ manipulation. Advising is bogged down I assume with other more imp issues.

Could he Take writing/social issues the following semester and take something else perhaps this semester? A GE requirement if he needs to. How many units is he currently carrying?

5 as of Monday morning, then got 4. Until a few hours ago he had 9. No one except us seemed to be too bothered with this. Fortuntately now he has managed to find a ge/writ option. He has missed only one session. Frankly am not concerned that he missed a class, but what got to me was how much uncertainity there was in this process. It need not have been this rough.

My S is having a problem too. He was placed in a French class that was to easy for him and the teacher has told him he has to find another one at his level but he has no room in his schedule for this other class. He is going to the French department today to figure it out.

Your situation sounds very atypical, to be honest. The course planning in each school is designed around standard-track undergrads who come in as freshmen. Transfers will have it harder, without question, and coming in with a bunch of stuff already taken care of will most likely not mean that you can simply plug in the next class you need. They come up with standard 4-year course plans for typical students, and they can’t accommodate everyone perfectly.

"how much uncertainty there was in this process. It need not have been this rough. "

I’m sorry to say this but his registration problems most probably stem from his not going to the HK International registration event in June. Almost all incoming Freshman were registered for classes in June- hence most classes were filled by the time mid Aug rolled around. this will be a lesson for him to remember in the future [I hope for both your sakes].

He’s is a freshman not a transfer.

As far as going to Hk was concerned, we looked at the option but decided against it due to time and family constraints. Not everyone went to hk. 30 odd kids went out of ?.

In the end when you are told that really being intl makes no diff and that there will be enough spaces for all freshman is all humbug. A lot of effort and running around is involved to fit things into schedule. As a new student not knowing anyone is not easy.

Personally for us at least it was not smooth.

We love USC though and this rough start does not takeaway from what it has to offer.

Peace.

So has it been all sorted out pixeljig? There are issues for everyone during registration. It can be a juggle fitting things in especially at this late date.

Yes, things have been sorted out. He is very happy there, just this one thing threw us off for one whole week, trying to figure things out. We have been up several nights in a row due to the time difference. Meanwhile I have come down with flu!

So relieved now, thanks.

Glad things are better! Get some sleep pixeljig!

Bbgg, how is it going for your son? Hope things are ok now.

He took the French placement test yesterday so he is waiting for the results to find out if he belongs in French 1 or 2. He should know Monday. Is your son making friends pixeljig?

He says people on his floor are nice but he has not connected with anyone as yet.
