Computer Science and Business Questions

So right now I'm a mechanical engineer and Im ahead about two quarters in my coursework so I have alot of empty space in my schedule for the next school year. I've been considering a Minor or even double major in business or computer science. I guess my questions is to business and computer science students, exactly what do your classes consist of? How difficult would you say you're classes are? Yes, I've talked to advisors and they're suprisingly unhelpful when it comes to minors and double majors because not many students do it. If any students who have taken any CS 10, 11,12,13,14 classes or above or students who have taken BUS 20 or any upper division business classes could give me any input/detail , it would be greatly appreciated!

from what i hear, you can’t double major or minor in business at ucr.

nevermind. you can minor in business. but im still pretty sure you can’t major in it. the site states “If you are majoring in another field, but still want to add the diversity of a business administration education, our minor might be for you. Visit our minor in business administration minor page to learn more.”, which implies that you can’t double major in business, and that’s what ive heard from older business majors. ive only taken lower div business classes. the business specific classes i have taken are bus10, math22, econ2, and stat48. ive also taken cs8, and im going to take bus20 and econ003 next quarter (if i can get econ003!). They were all easy. I’m standing at a 3.8ish. you generally can’t take upper div bus classes until you’re admitted into the School of Business Administration, which you can only apply to after you’ve finished the pre-business program, which is why i havent taken any upper divs yet.

Thanks so much! Thats the kind of answer I was looking for. Yah whats up with Econ 3 being 5 units? Did you get stuck at 12 or 13 units and they won’t lift the unit cap for you? I have physics, engineering, and econ 3 for fall and Im at 13 units and my advisor won’t lift my unit cap until September. I might just see ya in econ in fall. I didn’t know you had to be admitted before taking Upper Div, I thought you could just take them considering they have no pre reqs besides upper division standing which is having 90+ units.

no problem. sorry i cant help more, but i have no idea what the deal is for taking upper div business classes if you’re not in SoBA. Maybe I’m wrong and you can take upper divs if you’re not in SoBA. All I know is that SoBA is a selective college and you can’t be considered a business major unless you’re admitted into SoBA, which you can only apply to after you’ve finished your prereqs, until which you’re just a pre-business major in CHASS. Perhaps you just have to declare that you want a minor and they’ll tell the system that you’re allowed to enroll in upper div business classes?

And yeah, there are a lot of classes that are 5 units. 1 unit is supposed to equal 50 minutes spent in class per week or something like that, and although econ3 is 2-3 lectures and 1 discussion per week like most classes, i guess they deem it harder so worth more?

I got stuck at 13 units, two 4 unit classes and one 5 unit class. It’s irritating because honors students have had the cap lifted to 20 units every quarter up until now. But I’m going to enroll in hnpg98 too, which is getting honors units for my internship (and my boss said I can actually get a paycheck in Fall too! I’ve been interning unpaid, so this is super exciting for me), so that’ll get me four more units, even though those units only count towards my honors learning contract and not my major. And if I can’t get Econ3, I’m gonna take posc15 (also 5 units), which has a ton of empty seats, cause I’m considering a minor in polisci and in lgbit studies, and the only lgbs classes that I can take are already full lol. So I’ll end up with 22 units regardless.
